Pontifical Council for the Family

The former Pontifical Council for the Family ( Latin Pontificium Consilium pro Familia ) was established by John Paul II on May 9, 1981 with the Motu Proprio Familia a Deo Instituta . He solved this already in 1973 from Paul VI. established a Pontifical Committee for the Family . On October 22, 2015, Pope Francis announced that, as part of the reform of the Curia, he would establish a new dicastery for lay, family and life , in which the Pontifical Council for the Family would be incorporated. This dicastery was re-established by the Motu proprio Sedula Mater of August 17, 2016. The Pontifical Council for the Family was incorporated into it on September 1, 2016.

The council promoted and coordinated family pastoral care, protected the rights and dignity of families both within the Curia and externally, in dialogue with government agencies.
