Cardinal Ennio Antonelli (born November 18, 1936 in Todi , Province of Perugia , Italy ) is an emeritus Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church . Before that he was Archbishop of Florence from 2001 to 2008 .

Life

Ennio Antonelli studied in Assisi , Rome and Perugia trays Catholic theology , philosophy and literature . In Rome he acquired the license to teach Catholic theology, in Perugia he received his doctorate in literature and philosophy. In 1960 he received the sacrament of ordination by Archbishop Ilario Alcini . He then worked as a professor and regens at the seminary of Perugia and as a lecturer in art history in Assisi.

1982 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the Bishop of Gubbio . The episcopal ordination received his Decio Lucio Grandoni , Bishop of Orvieto-Todi ; Co- consecrators were Santo Bartolomeo Quadri , then Archbishop of Terni e Narni , and Antonio Fustella , Bishop of Saluzzo . In 1988 he was appointed Archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve . In 1995 he gave up his bishopric and became general secretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference .

On March 21, 2001, Ennio Antonelli was appointed Archbishop of Florence by John Paul II , and on October 21, 2003 he was accepted into the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte .

Antonelli was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Pope Benedict XVI. was chosen. On June 7, 2008, he appointed him to succeed Alfonso López Trujillo as President of the Pontifical Council for the Family . At the same time, the Pope asked him to forward the Archdiocese of Florence as Apostolic Administrator , which he did until October 26, 2008, the day the new Florentine Archbishop Giuseppe Betori took office .

On June 26, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation from the office of President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, put forward by Ennio Antonelli for reasons of age. After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Antonelli took part in the 2013 conclave , in which Pope Francis was elected.
