Giuseppe Cardinal Betori (born February 25, 1947 in Foligno , Province of Perugia , Italy ) is Archbishop of Florence .

Life

Giuseppe Betori, son of a teacher, received on 26 September 1970, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University , a licentiate in the subject Catholic Theology and was at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in specialist biblical criticism doctorate . On October 30, 1991, Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ). On September 26, 1996, Betori became Undersecretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference, before that he was head of its Catechism Office . Since December 1997 he has been preparing for the XV. Participates in World Youth Day in Rome , which took place in August 2000.

On April 5, 2001, he was elected General Secretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference and John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Falerone . He received his episcopal ordination on May 6, 2001, Cardinal Vicar Camillo Ruini in the Cathedral of Foligno; Co- consecrators were Arduino Bertoldo , Bishop of Foligno , Ennio Antonelli , Archbishop of Florence and later Cardinal , Antonio Buoncristiani , Bishop of Porto-Santa Rufina , and Giovanni Benedetti , Bishop Emeritus of Foligno. On April 6, 2006, Betori was confirmed as General Secretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference for another five years. However, he only held this office until October 2008.

On September 8th, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Florence. The inauguration took place on October 26, 2008. On February 10, 2009 he also became chairman of the regional bishops' conference of Tuscany .

On the evening of November 4, 2011, Betori's secretary, the 41-year-old Paolo Brogi, was gunned down by an unknown person in front of the bishopric in Florence and seriously injured. Brogi had not complied with the perpetrator's request to be admitted to Betori. The police arrested six suspects. Paolo Padoin , the Prefect of Florence, ordered increased police protection for Bishop Betori. In December of the same year he became a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture .

In the solemn consistory of February 18, 2012, Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marcello in the college of cardinals .

Cardinal Betori took after the resignation of Benedict XVI. the conclave in 2013 in part, in which Pope Francis has been selected.

In 2014 Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity and a member of the Congregation for the Clergy . and on July 1, 2017 a member of the Congregation for the Processes of Beatification and Canonization .

Giuseppe Betori is a member of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
