The Congregation for the Causes of Saints ( Latin: S. Congregatio de Causis Sanctorum ) is a dicastery of the Roman Curia with the task of examining and preparing the beatifications and canonizations .

Foundation and history

With the Constitution Immensa Aeterni Dei of January 22, 1588, Pope Sixtus V established the Congregation for Sacred Rites . It was her job to set standards for the practice of worship and to carry out the beatification and canonization processes. Pope Paul VI With the apostolic constitution Sacra Rituum Congregatio of May 8, 1969, the previous Congregation for Rites was divided into two separate dicasteries , one with responsibility for divine services and another with responsibility for beatifications and canonizations.

Since the Renaissance , extensive documentation of the entire process of beatification or canonization has been produced , most of which were published by the Vatican printer, the Reverendissima Camera Apostolica Vaticana in Rome.

The apostolic constitution Divinus Perfectionis Magister Pope John Paul II , published on January 25, 1983, reorganized the implementation of the canonization process. It assigns the diocesan bishops the task of making inquiries in their field on the life, veneration, virtues or martyrdom of persons who have died in the reputation of holiness. The constitution regulates the tasks and responsibilities of the staff of the congregation and those involved in the process of beatification or canonization.

Since the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. Beatifications are no longer carried out by the Pope, but - as was usual until 1975 - by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and normally in the diocese that carried out the beatification process. The canonizations, through which veneration is granted in the universal Church, are performed by the Pope.

In addition to the prefect, the congregation itself consists of 18 cardinals, six archbishops and eight bishops, who are usually appointed by the Pope for five years each.
