Giuseppe Cardinal Petrocchi (born August 19, 1948 in Ascoli Piceno , Italy ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of L'Aquila .

Life

Giuseppe Petrocchi studied from 1965 in Ascoli Piceno and from 1967 on the recommendation of his home bishop Marcello Morgante in Rome . He received on 14 September 1973, the sacrament of holy orders and was henceforth served as pastor of various parishes. In addition, Petrocchi was involved from 1973 to 1975 in the field of youth pastoral care. From 1975 to 1985 he was Rector of the Episcopal Vocational Training Center in Ascoli Piceno. In 1991 he became editor-in-chief of the local church newspaper , which he remained until 1998.

On June 27, 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno . The bishop of Ascoli Piceno , Silvano Montevecchi , ordained him episcopal on September 20 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the bishop emeritus of Ascoli Piceno, Marcello Morgante , and the bishop emeritus of Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno, Domenico Simone Pecile . In the diocese that was only merged in 1986, Petrocchi reformed pastoral care by creating an effective pastoral organization.

On June 8, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of L'Aquila. On June 29, 2013 he received the pallium from the hands of the Pope. The installation as Metropolitan took place on July 7, 2013.

In the consistory of June 28, 2018, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in the college of cardinals . Petrocchi himself described his appointment as "unexpected" and interpreted it as a "sign of closeness" from the Pope to the victims of the earthquake in central Italy. The takeover of his titular church took place on March 3rd of the following year.
