Marcello Morgante

Marcello Morgante (born March 23, 1915 in Carpineto Sinello , Chieti Province , Italy , † May 20, 2007 in Ascoli Piceno ) was bishop of the Ascoli Piceno diocese .

Life

From 1924 to 1935 Marcello Morgante studied at the seminary in Ravenna , at the Pontifical Roman Seminary and from 1940 to 1945 at the Pontificio Seminario Romano Giuridico Sant'Apollinare . He graduated in philosophy ( magna cum laude ) and theology ( summa cum laude ) and canon law (summa cum laude). On February 26, 1938, Morgante was ordained a priest from Cardinal Luigi Traglia . He worked for the Roman Curia as a lawyer, diplomat with a focus on palaeography and at the Archivio di Stato di Roma.

From 1947 to 1957 he was vicar general of the Archdiocese of Ravenna-Cervia, later also as diocesan administrator . On February 16, 1957, he was appointed Bishop of Ascoli Piceno , succeeding Ambrogio Squintani , and consecrated by Giacomo Cardinal Lercaro . In 1991 his resignation was accepted by John Paul II .

Marcello Morgante was involved in the preparation of the Second Vatican Council as a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments . From 1963 to 1971 he was a member of the Episcopal Commission for the Holy Liturgy in Italy ("Commissione episcopale nazionale per la Sacra Liturgia"). After that he was President of the Bishops' Conference of Marken from 1971 to 1991.

From 1985 he also worked as a journalist and publicist. In 1981 he was responsible for the press work of Ali Ağca's assassination attempt on John Paul II.

Morgante became a Grand Officer (Grand Ufficiale) of the French Legion of Honor in 1998 .
