Mauro Cardinal Piacenza (born September 15, 1944 in Genoa , Italy ) is a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Piacenza joined in 1964 the seminary of Genoa and received on 21 December 1969 by Giuseppe Cardinal Siri , the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Genoa . From 1970 to 1975 he was parish vicar of the parish of Santa Agnese e Nostra Signora del Carmine . In 1973 he became Confessor of the Major Seminary, which he remained until 1978. He then became a chaplain at the University of Genoa, before being appointed to the Curia in 1990 . At times he taught in Genoa at the Liceo classico Cristoforo Colombo . In 2000 Piacenza became Undersecretary of the Congregation for the Clergy .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Victoriana and President of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Goods of the Church on October 13, 2003 . On November 15, 2003, he received the episcopal ordination through Tarcisio Bertone . On August 28, 2004 he also became president of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology. Both offices expired with his appointment as secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy, which Pope Benedict XVI. pronounced on May 7, 2007. At the same time, the Pope also awarded him the title of titular archbishop. On October 7, 2010 Benedict XVI appointed him. as Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.

In the solemn consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI accepted him. as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Paolo all Tre Fontane in the college of cardinals .

On September 21, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him major penitentiary at the court of grace, the Apostolic Penitentiary .

Cardinal Piacenza is Honorary Conventual Chaplain to the Sovereign Order of Malta .

Since August 15, 2014 Piacenza has been the first honorary citizen of the parish of Our Lady in Walde-St. Felix .
