Cardinal Stella

Beniamino Cardinal Stella (born August 18, 1941 in Pieve di Soligo , Treviso Province ) is an Italian clergyman and cardinal curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

On March 19, 1966, Beniamino Stella was ordained priest for the diocese of Vittorio Veneto . After completing a doctorate in canon law , he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1970 . From 1983 to 1987 he worked at the Pontifical Missions in Santo Domingo and Zaire , then for the Council for Public Affairs of the Church, with the Apostolic Nuncio in Malta and again at the Council for Public Affairs of the Church.

On August 21, 1987, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Midila and Curia Archbishop of the State Secretariat of the Vatican by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination donated Pope John Paul II himself on September 5. 1987; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Eduardo Martínez Somalo , and Jean Orchampt , Bishop of Angers .

On November 7, 1987, he was appointed Apostolic Delegate in Chad and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in the Republic of the Congo . In 1989 he was raised to the rank of pro-nuncio in Chad. On December 15, 1992 he moved to Cuba as Apostolic Nuncio and on February 11, 1999 to Colombia as Nuncio .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on October 13, 2007 President of the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy on September 21, 2013 . On November 30, 2013 he was appointed a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education by the Pope .

In the consistory of February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Santi Cosma e Damiano in the college of cardinals .

On June 11, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Commission for the State of Vatican City . Pope Francis also appointed him Cardinal Bishop of Porto-Santa Rufina on May 1, 2020 .

Stella speaks English, French, Spanish and German. Stella advocates the admission of married priests alongside celibate priests in the Roman Catholic Church.
