Diego Causero (born January 13, 1940 in Moimacco , Friuli-Venezia Giulia , Italy ) is a Roman Catholic Archbishop and diplomat emeritus of the Holy See .

Life

Diego Causero studied after his theological training at the Archbishop's Seminary of the Archdiocese of Udine from 1959 to 1964 Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He was ordained a priest on April 7, 1963 by Giuseppe Zaffonato , Archbishop of Udine . From 1964 to 1966 he completed a doctoral degree in liturgy at the Institute for Liturgy of the Anselmianum in Rome. He was initially active in pastoral care and spiritual at the seminary in Udine. From 1969 to 1973 he worked for the Pontifical Academy . He graduated in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome . In 1973 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. On September 5, 1974, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the honorary title of chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ). Causero worked at the Apostolic Nunciatures for Nigeria (1973–1976), Spain (1976–1980), Syria (1980–1984) and Australia (1984–1987), among others . From 1988 to 1991 he was the representative of the Holy See at the United Nations in Geneva . In 1991 he established the nunciature in Tirana , Albania .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Meta on December 15, 1992 and appointed him apostolic nuncio to Chad , and shortly afterwards to the Central African Republic and the Republic of the Congo . He was ordained bishop on January 6, 1993 by Pope John Paul II himself; Co- consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Giovanni Battista Re and Justin Francis Rigali . In 1995 he handed over the nunciature of the Republic of the Congo to Luigi Pezzuto , in 1999 he passed the nunciature of the Central African Republic on to Joseph Chennoth . On March 31, 1999 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Syria by Pope John Paul II .

On February 24, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop of Gradum . On January 10, 2004 he was appointed nuncio for the Czech Republic .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on May 28, 2011 as Apostolic Nuncio for Switzerland and Liechtenstein with official seat in Bern ; he succeeded Archbishop Francesco Canalini in office. His term of office ended on September 5, 2015 with the appointment of Thomas Gullickson as his successor.

Archbishop Causero speaks Italian, French, English, German and Spanish.
