Faustino Sainz Muñoz

Faustino Sainz Muñoz (born June 5, 1937 in Almadén , Ciudad Real province , Spain , † October 31, 2012 in Madrid ) was a diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Faustino Sainz Muñoz studied philosophy and Catholic theology . He completed a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome . He was ordained a priest on December 19, 1964 and was vicar in Somosierra in 1965/66 . From 1965 to 1967 he taught law at the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS) of the Pax Romana ICMICA and was diocesan representative of the IMCS from 1966/67. 1966/67 he was also in pastoral care in the Madrid parish of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción .

Sainz entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1970 and graduated from the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . He was initially active in the papal missions in Senegal and Scandinavia as well as in the Council of Public Affairs of the Church of the Vatican State Secretariat. In 1975 he was a member of the delegation of the Holy See to the preparatory talks of the delegated Commission for Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). He was then responsible for relations with Poland, Hungary and later the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in the Vatican State Secretariat. In 1978 he accompanied Cardinal Antonio Samorè and was able to successfully avert a military conflict between Chile and Argentina ( Beagle conflict ). In 1979 he accompanied Pope John Paul II on a trip to his native Poland.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Novaliciana and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Cuba on October 29, 1988 . He received his episcopal ordination from Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli on December 18, 1988; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Maximino Romero de Lema and Angel Cardinal Suquía Goicoechea , Archbishop of Madrid . With his work in Cuba and the many conversations with Fidel Castro, he made a significant contribution to the positive development of the Catholic Church in Cuba .

On October 7, 1992, John Paul II called him Apostolic Nuncio in Zaire (from 1997 Democratic Republic of the Congo ). The Apostolic Nunciature was a sought-after refuge during the 1994 Rwandan genocide . On January 21, 1999, he was appointed the first Apostolic Nuncio for the European Union in Brussels ; he was significantly involved in the development of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe .

On December 11, 2004, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in the United Kingdom . After a minor stroke on May 16, 2010, he insisted on Pope Benedict XVI. on his apostolic journey in Great Britain in Edinburgh in September 2010. On December 2, 2010, he completed his service in the UK with a thanksgiving service at Westminster Cathedral . Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation on December 5, 2010 for health reasons. He died of complications from a brain tumor. He was buried in the parish church of Concepción de Nuestra Señora de Madrid ; the ceremony was chaired by Antonio María Cardinal Rouco , Archbishop of Madrid and Chairman of the Spanish Bishops' Conference.

Faustino Sainz enjoyed a great reputation in Chile, England and Wales because of his work. He was honored with an Honorary Doctorate in Law from the University of Aberdeen in 2007 .
