Hummes is the descendant of the German Johann Josef Hummes from Buch im Hunsrück , who emigrated with his family to Brazil in 1857 and settled there as a colonist.

education

Cláudio Hummes spent his school days in the Jesuit college "Colégio Santo Inácio" of Salvador do Sul and then entered the Franciscan order . He studied Catholic theology and philosophy first in Brazil, later at the Antonianum in Rome and at the Ecumenical Institute of the University of Geneva . He earned a doctorate in philosophy and received on August 3, 1958 by the Koadjutorerzbischof of Belo Horizonte , Joao Resende Costa , the ordination .

Career as a clergyman

First, Hummes taught philosophy at the Franciscan seminary in Garibaldi , then at the seminary of Viamão and at the Pontifical College of Porto Alegre . For many years he was an advisor to the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB) on ecumenical issues . In addition, he repeatedly took on leadership roles in the Franciscan order.

On March 22, 1975, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Carcabia and Coadjutor Bishop of Santo André . The Archbishop of Fortaleza , Aloísio Lorscheider OFM, donated him episcopal ordination on May 25 of the same year . Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Mauro Morelli from São Paulo and Urbano José Allgayer from Porto Alegre . With the resignation of Jorge Marcos de Oliveira on December 29, 1975, he succeeded him as Bishop of Santo André. From the time of his appointment as bishop, Hummes became more involved against the military dictatorship and, among other things, saved the union leader and later Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from police access.

On May 29, 1996 he was appointed Archbishop of Fortaleza by Pope John Paul II and two years later, on April 15, 1998, Archbishop of São Paulo. Pope John Paul II accepted him on February 21, 2001 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Antonio da Padova in Via Merulana in the college of cardinals .

In 2000, Hummes helped remove the Franciscan and liberation theologian Paulo Suess from his chair in São Paulo . As a sign of pluralism in the Church, Hummes saw the canonical reconciliation of Lefebvre followers Licínio Rangel in January 2002 and his appointment as apostolic administrator of a personal diocese directly subordinate to Rome and head of the brotherhood of St. John Maria Vianney founded by Rangel .

Hummes was valid until the election of Benedict XVI. 2005 in public as papabile .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Cláudio Hummes on October 31, 2006 cardinal prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy . In the same year, Hummes surprised with a statement on celibacy , in which he confirmed that the celibacy of priests is not a dogma , but merely a disciplinary norm. On October 7, 2010, Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.

Cardinal Hummes attended the 2013 conclave , in which Pope Francis was elected. According to him, it was Hummes who inspired him to choose his Pope's name when he reminded him not to forget the poor.

On June 11, 2016, Francis appointed him envoy to the Eucharistic Congress in Brazil, which took place from August 15 to 21 of the same year. He was the general relator of the Synod of Bishops , which was held from October 6th to 27th, 2019 , a special meeting on the topic of "Amazonia - new ways for the Church and a holistic ecology".
