Urbano José Allgayer

Urbano José Allgayer (born March 16, 1924 in Lajeado , Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil ; † May 14, 2019 in Passo Fundo ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Passo Fundo .

Life

Urbano José Allgayer studied philosophy and theology at the central seminar “Our Lady of Conception” in São Leopoldo and philosophy at the Jesuit University Unisinos in São Leopoldo. He was ordained a priest on December 10, 1950 . In 1983 he completed advanced training in New Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome .

He was secretary of the regional conference 3 of the CNBB, professor of ethics and history of the Church at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul , founder of Itepa - Institute for Theology and Pastoral of Passo Fundo - and author of the book compendium on Catholic moral teaching.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 5, 1974 titular bishop of Tunnuna and auxiliary bishop in Porto Alegre . The Archbishop of Porto Alegre, Cardinal Alfredo Vicente Scherer , donated him episcopal ordination on March 24th of the same year in the Cathedral of Porto Alegre ; Co- consecrators were Alberto Frederico Etges , Bishop of Santa Cruz do Sul , and Nei Paulo Moretto , Bishop of Cruz Alta .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Passo Fundo on February 4, 1982. On May 19, 1999, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
