The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS-RG) ( Portuguese Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul ) is a Brazilian university under papal law . It is the largest private university in Brazil .

The forerunner of today's university was the Nossa Senhora do Rosário School in Porto Alegre , founded in 1937 by the Order of the Marists , a higher school for politics and economics. In 1945, three further universities developed from this, the School of Philosophy, Science and Language , followed by the School of Social Services and in 1947 the School of Law . These four schools were combined as União Sul Brasileira de Educação e Ensino (USBEE) and on November 9, 1948, the state-recognized private Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul was founded .

The Archbishop of Porto Alegre, Alfredo Vicente Scherer , was the university's first chancellor and opened the course on December 8, 1948. The founding rector was Armando Pereira de Câmara . 1951 took place by Pope Pius XII. recognition as a university under papal law.

At the main location in Porto Alegre in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and the branches Uruguaiana and Viamão , more than 30,000 students study in 22 faculties .
