The Marist Brothers ( Fratres Maristae a Scholis , religious symbol : FMS), also Marist brothers or short Marist called, are a religious order in the Roman Catholic Church .

history

The congregation, made up of Brothers and Fathers , was founded on January 2nd, 1817 by the French priest Marcellin Champagnat in La Valla-en-Gier ( Loire , France ). Besides the school brothers belong to the Marists the Marist Sisters , the Marist Fathers who Maristenmissionsschwestern and an association of lay people . In 1914 the Marist brothers founded their first branch in Germany in Recklinghausen.

After the National Socialists imposed a ban on teaching and raising children in Germany, Marist school brothers founded the Collegium Marianum grammar school in Vaduz in the Principality of Liechtenstein in 1937 . It was the first and only grammar school in Liechtenstein. From 1968 it was also open to girls. In 1981 the Liechtenstein state took over the sponsorship and management of the grammar school. In 1991 the Marist school brothers left Liechtenstein and returned to Germany.

The aim of the congregation is to educate and instruct young people in all forms of educational work. The work for marginalized groups and the poor is increasingly becoming the focus of work.

The community currently has around 4,300 members in 78 countries. It operates 870 schools worldwide, especially in Africa (focus on Kenya). Since 2009, Brother Emili Turú Rofes, who replaced Seán Dominic Sammon, who had been in office since 2001, has been the Superior General of the Congregation.

Germany

In Germany , the Marist schools operate mainly in southern Germany, in Cham (Upper Palatinate) , Furth (Lower Bavaria) and Mindelheim (Unterallgäu district). The latter school, the so-called Marist College , is one of the largest Marist schools in the world. It consists of a grammar school with three branches and a secondary school with two branches. There is also a secondary school in Recklinghausen ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The Maristen-Gymnasium Furth was taken over in 2006 by the School Foundation of the Diocese of Regensburg . Since 2002 there has been an international community in Dessau ( Saxony-Anhalt ) that looks after people on the margins of society (prisoners, immigrants, hospital patients) as well as local youth work. The German headquarters is a corporation under public law in Furth near Landshut and has been called the Institute of the Marist Brothers FMS Germany in the province of Europe-Central-West since 2003.

Chile

On August 14, 2018, the leading Chilean police , a raid by the offices of the national bishops' conference. Evidence of sexual crimes by members of the Marist Order was sought. The branch of the Marist school brothers was also the target of a search. At this point in time, 38 relevant investigations against Marists were pending in Chile .
