Marcellin Champagnat
Marcellin Joseph Benoît Champagnat (born May 20, 1789 in Marlhes near Saint-Étienne , † June 6, 1840 in Saint-Chamond ) was a priest and founder of the order of the Marist Brothers .
Marcellin Champagnat grew up as the ninth of ten children in Le Rosey, a hamlet near Marlhes. On July 2, 1816, he was ordained a Catholic priest after he had already decided on this way of life at the age of 14. In 1817 Champagnat founded the Marist Brothers. In 1820 the first school brothers whom he trained began to give religious instruction in the surrounding villages. Despite many difficulties, Champagnat saw his fraternity expand rapidly. Today she is one of the ten largest male orders in the Catholic Church .
On May 29, 1955 he was by Pope Pius XII. beatified. 44 years later, on April 18, 1999, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
