The Chilean Police are divided into the Uniformed Police Carabineros de Chile and the Criminal Police Policía de Investigaciones de Chile . There are no regional police units in Chile .

history

After the military coup in 1973, the Chilean police Carabineros de Chile came under the Ministry of Defense. Only with the return to democracy did operational command again pass to the Minister of the Interior; nevertheless, nominal control remained with the Ministry of Defense. General Eduardo Gordon Valcárcel (2013) heads the police force here.

During the Chilean schoolchildren and student protests in Chile 2011–2012 by tens of thousands of students against the education system, which lasted over a year , there were repeated violent clashes with the police. Protesters threw stones and police used tear gas and water cannons. The protests were regularly banned by the government at the time, which, according to the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, "was a guarantee that there would be numerous arrests and police violence against peaceful demonstrators." By August 2011, a total of around 1,400 people had been arrested by the police. According to the authorities, 132 people were arrested in Santiago in October 2011 and at least 30 people were injured.

In August 2011, the police fired live ammunition at students for the first time in the port city of Valparaíso . In the same month, secret arms deliveries to the army became known. The right-wing mayor of Santiago de Chile called for the army to be used against demonstrators.

The Carabineros number around 35,000 men. The main tasks include the general law enforcement service in the cities and in the countryside, the control and safety of road traffic, the fight against drug-related crime and border control.

The Grupo de Operaciones Policiales Especiales (GOPE) are the special forces of the police of Chile. The GOPE units are used for police work in dangerous situations throughout Chile. The tasks include the localization and defusing of explosives, hostage rescue and arrests under difficult conditions.

GOPE was founded on June 7, 1979 by a corresponding federal law, and the tasks for these special forces increased from the 1980s.

Policía de Investigaciones de Chile

The Chiles Criminal Police Policía de Investigaciones de Chile is a separate police unit and was founded in 1933. It reports directly to the Ministry of the Interior.

Human rights

The police cracked down on the Chilean school and student protests in Chile from 2011 to 2012 , and there were repeated allegations against the authorities that freedom and human rights were not being respected. The demonstrators, including minors, complained that some of them had been beaten or manipulated by officials. For a short time, some of them had to strip naked, and there were also allegations of abuse.
