history

The original school building - today the former boarding school - was supposed to be a retirement home , but since the city ran out of money due to the economic crisis at the time, it was converted into a school house. At first only for boys, later the grammar school for girls and boys. However, as more and more students were being taught, today's old building was built and the former boarding school was built. The study church, which was supposed to be built before the Second World War , was only completed after the war. In 1975 the new building, the specialist wing with a puppet stage and auditorium and the triple sports hall were built because the school was overcrowded. The cafeteria is also located in the basement of the new building. An open all-day school has existed since 1997. Today the two schools have almost 1,100 students and around 100 teachers.

From 2009 to 2013, a jury made up of schoolchildren awarded the Mindelheim Philosophy Prize for authors of philosophical books for children and young people.

While just under 1950 students attended school in the 2007/08 school year, there were only 1046 in 2018/19.

Sexual offenses

In the 1980s there was a sexual assault by a friar against a student. According to press reports, he always had him come to his private chamber in the evening, where he then molested him. However, he was not tried until 2010 and was sentenced to imprisonment.

In 2008, the former boarding school director of the Marist boarding school was sentenced to a suspended sentence for sexual abuse. This case was only made public in 2010 and was hushed up by the school until then. He was later sentenced to one year and six months' imprisonment for additionally abusing a 13-year-old boy during a trip to Luxembourg. The act happened between February 21 and 23, 2004. In addition, the convict had to continue psychotherapy.

In an anonymous interview with Augsburger Allgemeine in 2010, a former student at the boarding school reported on the mental and physical abuse of the former boarding school director and the educators. In his four years there, he felt like he was locked in, the only freedoms were driving home on the weekend and one and a half hours of free time every week. The food at the boarding school was meager, many bought groceries during outdoor activity in Mindelheim, which were secretly stashed in the boarding school.

In 2011 it became known that a recently employed teacher at the Marist College allegedly molested a girl in an Ingolstadt leisure pool during the winter holidays. The testimony of the girl's brother further accused him. In the course of the investigation, child pornographic files were discovered in his main and secondary residence. He was sentenced to 1½ years' imprisonment, suspended on probation. In addition, he is not allowed to approach schools, kindergartens or bus stops.

In November 2017 it became known that the then Nördlingen dean Paul Erber allegedly assaulted three boys during his time as a pastor at the boarding school of the Marist College. In a conversation with the victims, he admitted the act. As a result, he was relieved of duties and retired on November 20.
