The Schulwerk of the Diocese of Augsburg ( Diocese of Augsburg ) was founded in 1975 under the leadership of Bishop Josef Stimpfle . The responsible foundation supervisory authority is the Episcopal Finance Chamber of the Diocese of Augsburg. According to the statutes, it is the task and purpose of this ecclesiastical foundation to support preschool, school and school-like institutions with a Catholic character, primarily in the area of the diocese of Augsburg . For centuries, such institutions have been largely supported by so-called school orders such as the Dillingen Franciscan Sisters , the Benedictines , the Maria Ward Sisters or the Franciscan Sisters of Maria Stern . Accordingly, the Christian image of man and the faith of the church in connection with the respective religious tradition are of particular importance for the institutions of the school. They offer a church-based alternative to the public school system. The chairman of the foundation council is the Bishop of Augsburg, chairman of the foundation council is auxiliary bishop Florian Wörner ; Peter Kosak is the chairman of the board.

The Schulwerk of the Diocese of Augsburg takes on all the tasks of a school authority, whereby the guarantee of the framework conditions for an efficient, value-oriented, modern and student-friendly school has top priority. Accordingly, its specific tasks are:

School staffing and staff administration
Finance and property management
Organization of school operations in cooperation with the school management
Promote the Catholic and educational profile of schools

The Schulwerk employs over 2,000 people. It runs 42 schools, all of which are members of the Catholic Schools in Bavaria .

The Schulwerk of the Diocese of Augsburg includes 10 grammar schools, 20 secondary schools, three elementary schools, one middle school, five specialist academies for social pedagogy, one technical college, one vocational school for nutrition and care and one vocational school for child care.

In the 2020/21 school year, the Rudolf Diesel Realschule in Augsburg will be taken over and will continue to be run as the Bischof Ulrich Realschule . A primary school is also to be built on the school grounds in the Kriegshaber district from the school year 2021/22, subject to government approval.

Petrus Canisius Prize

Since 2012, the Schulwerk has been awarding the Petrus Canisius Prize, named after the former cathedral preacher, to students (projects / groups) who are particularly committed to the school community at a Catholic school. Since 2017 (sixth award ceremony), the categories of teacher projects and school family projects have also been set up. All three categories are each endowed with 1000 euros.
