Maria Ward Realschule Wallerstein is a state-recognized, private Realschule sponsored by the Schulwerk of the Diocese of Augsburg . It was founded over 150 years ago by the Maria Ward Sisters , commonly known as English Misses .
History and present
Four sisters of the English Misses from Mindelheim founded a branch in Wallerstein in 1859 . In accordance with their mission, they dedicated themselves to the education and upbringing of young girls. They took over responsibility for the girls' elementary school, which was set up in the so-called Klösterle . After four years, the sisters started a secondary school for girls. The educational institution was open to girls of all denominations. A boarding school, housed in the Klösterle , was soon attached to the school. This was closed in 2006 due to a lack of demand, as only about 25 students were still living in the boarding school, previously there were up to 80. In addition to the secondary school for girls , a six-class lyceum was added at the turn of the century . Over the years, this required several extensions, conversions and new buildings. During the Nazi dictatorship, the educational institution experienced severe restrictions and eventually had to cease operations. After the collapse, the Maria Ward Sisters reopened a girls' middle school, which was converted into a secondary school in the mid-1960s .
In 1989 the Schulwerk of the Diocese of Augsburg took over responsibility for the school. In order to ensure the continued existence of the institution, those responsible agreed, contrary to the rule of the order, to accept boys from the 1998/99 school year. The year the school took over, the facility was completely renovated. 20 years later (2009) the sisters withdrew completely from Wallerstein because of a lack of young people and because they were getting older.
In the school year 2014/15, 181 students (102 girls and 79 boys) in six classes attended the educational institution. They are taught by 15 teachers. In order to support the small school financially, a support association was founded in 1997 when it was about to be closed because of its deficit.
