Nikolai Sergeyev ( Russian Николай Дмитриевич Сергеев ; born September 22 . Jul / 5. October  1909 greg. In the village of Starye Petrowzy, Kiev Governorate , † 11. February 1999 in Moscow ) was a Soviet Commodore .

Life

Sergeyev served in the Red Fleet from 1928 and was a member of the CPSU from 1930 . He graduated from the Naval Officer School " MW Frunze " in 1931 and then became commander and political officer of a training unit in the Amur flotilla . In 1932 he continued his military career as commander of the artillery sector on the " Sun Yat-sen " monitor and from 1935 as its first officer. In 1937 he became the commandant of the monitor "Dalnewostochny Komosomolets" and in 1939 monitor division commander in the Amur flotilla.

Second World War

Sergeyev graduated from the Naval War Academy in 1941 and was subsequently employed with the rank of Corvette Captain in the Navy's main staff. During the German-Soviet War he was responsible for planning combat operations and coordinating naval operations with the land forces. In May 1943 he became ship brigade commander of the Volga flotilla . The military ability of the flotilla to act was very limited at this time, since the German air force constantly mined the fairway of the Volga in order to prevent the transport of Baku oil to the center of the country. In 1943 all ships in the flotilla were used to clear mines. In September 1943 Sergeyev became chief of staff of the Volga flotilla. After the flotilla was disbanded in June 1944, he served in the naval main staff.

post war period

From 1945 he was head of a department in the main staff of the Soviet Navy and from 1947 head of administration there. In this position he was Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Navy from 1950. In 1952 he commanded the White Sea Flotilla and in 1954 he was responsible for running one of the flotilla ships to the island of Novaya Zemlya . On board were scientists and high-ranking military personnel who were asked to choose a suitable place for Soviet nuclear weapons tests. In 1955, he led the naval preparatory work for the implementation of the first submarine nuclear weapon explosion .

In 1956, Sergeyev became Chief of Operational Management and Deputy Chief of the Naval Main Staff and from 1964, during the Cold War , was Chief of the Naval Main Staff for thirteen years. During this time he was responsible for expanding the Soviet nuclear submarine fleet and played an important role in the development of the navy. On April 30, 1970 he was appointed Fleet Admiral. From 1977 he worked in the group of inspectors general of the Ministry of Defense of the Soviet Union and has been retired since 1992. He lived in Moscow until his death and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery.
