Ivan Matveyevich Kapitanez ( Russian Иван Матвеевич Капитанец * 10. January 1928 in Vorwerk Nekljudowka, Rajon Kascharski , Krai North Caucasus , now Rostov Oblast ; † 25. September 2018 in Moscow ) was a Soviet - Russian Commodore .

Life

Kapitanez began his career in the Soviet naval navy in 1946 . In 1950 he graduated from the Caspian Red Banner Officers College of the Naval Forces SM Kirov , then served in the Northern Fleet as a combat section commander for artillery (GA-2) on the destroyer Okryljonny and as chief officer on this ship from 1953 to 1956. After completing specialty courses in Leningrad in 1957, he returned to the Northern Fleet and commanded the destroyer Otrywisty and from 1958 to 1961 the destroyer Ostry .

In 1964 Kapitanez graduated from the Naval War Academy , became Chief of Staff of the 176th Ship Reserve Brigade and from 1966 commander of the 170th Destroyer Brigade of the Northern Fleet. In 1970 he finished the Military Academy of the General Staff . Until 1973 he held the post of Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the 5th Marine Squadron in the Mediterranean. He developed surveillance and action tactics against groups of the US Navy and was responsible for ensuring the supply of the Soviet submarines operating in the Mediterranean . After he was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1972 , he commanded the Kamchatka Flotilla of the Pacific Fleet from 1973 . In 1975 he had the rank of Vice Admiral . He worked from 1978 as 1st deputy commander of the Baltic Fleet and from 1981 as its commander. After Kapitanez was appointed admiral in 1982, he led the northern fleet from 1985 . In March 1988 he became 1st Deputy Commander in Chief of the Soviet Navy. By resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on September 4, 1988, he was awarded the rank of Naval Admiral . In 1992 Kapitanez retired.

From 1984 to 1989 he was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and from 1986 to 1990 a candidate for the Central Committee of the CPSU . In addition to his work as director of the State Naval Center of the Russian Federation, from 1995 he was an honorary member of the Academy of Military Sciences and chairman of the Academy's naval department. Kapitanez died on September 25, 2018 after a serious illness and was buried in the Trojekurovo cemetery in Moscow on September 28, 2018 .
