Fleet Admiral

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fleet Admiral is a rank in the navy of various countries. It is a prominent rank (rank) or a position occupied by an experienced admiral who is in command of larger groups of ships or fleets, or sometimes groups of entire fleets . If it is explicitly about a rank, the equivalent of a General of the Army or General Field Marshal of the Army Forces , the name of this rank depends on the country in question, including the Fleet Admiral , Admiral of the Fleet, Admiral of the Navy or Grand Admiral .

The rank of Fleet Admiral must not be confused with the Flotilla Admiral, who is much lower in rank .

The United Kingdom has the highest rank of the Royal Navy, the Admiral of the Fleet (NATO rank code OF-10).

120 people have been appointed since 1690, the last time in 2014. Members of the British or other royal families have received the rank ten times, some of them honorary, including Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh .

Well-known Admirals of the Fleet were Richard Howe from 1796 , 1st Earl Howe , 1905 John Fisher , 1914 John Jellicoe , 1919 David Beatty , 1939 Dudley Pound , 1940 Charles Forbes , 1943 Andrew Cunningham , 1945 James Fownes Somerville , 1956 Louis Mountbatten .

The rank dates back to the early days of the Royal Navy squadrons. Each squadron was assigned a color, red, white or blue. Each colored squadron had an admiral in command of a vice admiral and a rear admiral. The Admiral of the Fleet was the commander of the entire admirals and thus literally the admiral of the fleet. Between 1795 and 1827, the Commander of the Royal Navy held the title of Admiral of the Fleet, a position later held by the First Sea Lord .
