First sea lord

First Sea Lord (English First Sea Lord ) is in the UK today, the highest-ranking official position within the Royal Navy . The First Sea Lord is now within the British Ministry of Defense at the same time chief of staff of the Royal Navy ( Chief of Naval Staff ). The abbreviation is 1SL / CNS. The office is not to be confused with that of the First Lord of the Admiralty , which corresponds to the function of Minister of the Navy .

history

The post of First Sea Lord emerged from the post of First Naval Lord , which existed from 1828 to 1904. The position changed over the course of history, with the history of the First Sea Lord being closely linked to the history of the British Admiralty .

Originally, responsibility for running the Royal Navy lay with a single person, the Lord High Admiral . From the 18th century on, this task was mostly carried out by a committee , the Board of Admiralty . The members of this committee were called Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and were composed of admirals of the Royal Navy and civilians. The admirals on the Board of Admiralty were known as "Sea Lords". There were last five of them (see here ), whereby the First Sea Lord was responsible for the operational management of the Royal Navy. The chairmanship of the entire Board of Admiralty was led by the First Lord of the Admiralty ("First Lord of the Admiralty"), who was usually a member of the cabinet and after 1806 was always a civilian. He had political responsibility for the Royal Navy and was therefore also known as the "Minister of the Navy".

The organizational structure described within the British Admiralty existed until the second half of the 20th century. In 1964, all previous functions of the Admiralty were transferred to the United Kingdom's Department of Defense, which was newly created that year . New departments were created within the Ministry of Defense, some of which were named after previous authorities, and the name First Sea Lord for the operational head of the Royal Navy was retained after 1964.
