Admiral John David Elliott Fieldhouse, Baron Fieldhouse , (born February 12, 1928 in Leeds , † February 17, 1992 in Southampton ) was a British peer and chairman of the Defense Committee.

life and career

Fieldhouse, son of Sir Harold Fieldhouse and Mabel Elaine Fieldhouse b. Elliott, attended the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth . In 1944 he became a cadet in the British Navy, was promoted to ensign in 1945 and to lieutenant in 1949, and subsequently served on several submarines.

British Navy

In 1956, after graduating from commanders' school, Fieldhouse took over his first command of the HMS Subtle. In 1957 he was promoted to corvette captain , in 1961 to frigate captain ( commander ) and in 1967 to captain at sea ( captain ). In 1972, with the rank of commodore , he took over the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 and began working for the British Ministry of Defense. In 1978 he was named Rear Admiral and in the 1980 New Year Honors as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath to "Sir". In 1981 he was appointed admiral. After the Argentine Army occupied the Falkland Islands in April 1982, Fieldhouse commanded the Falklands invasion and the successful retake. He was named Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in the 1982 Birthday Honors “in recognition of his service in operations in the South Atlantic”. As a result, he convinced the British government to replace the ships lost in the Falklands War. Fieldhouse was First Sea Lord from 1982 to 1985 . His last promotion to Admiral of the Fleet was in 1985.

Next life

Fieldhouse retired from active service in December 1988 but continued to work as a consultant for shipbuilding company Vosper Thornycroft . In 1992 he had to undergo heart surgery. He contracted an infection which resulted in his death.

Life peer

Fieldhouse was raised to Life Peer in 1990 as Baron Fieldhouse , of Gosport in the County of Hampshire , and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .

family

Fieldhouse married Margaret Cull in 1953; the couple had a son and two daughters.
