David Brownrigg Craig, Baron Craig of Radley GCB , OBE (born September 17, 1929 in Dublin ) is a retired British Marshal of the Royal Air Force and a member of the House of Lords .

Life

David Brownrigg Craig grew up in Ireland and did not come to the UK until 1943, where he attended Radley College Public School in Abingdon . He then studied at Lincoln College of Oxford University .

In 1951 he began an officer career in the Royal Air Force . From 1967 to 1971 he held the post of aide-de-camp for Queen Elizabeth II . From 1968 to 1970 he was a senior officer at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell . From 1970 to 1971 he was Director of Plans and Operations at the British Headquarters for the Far East and from 1972 to 1973 he was in command of the Royal Air Force Base Akrotiri in Cyprus . From 1980 to 1982 he was Vice-Chief of the Air Staff and 1985 to 1988 Chief of the Air Staff . In 1988 he was promoted to the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force and was Chief of the Defense Staff from 1988 to 1991 . The Second Gulf War also fell during this period .

In 1991 he resigned from the Royal Air Force and was promoted to Life Peer on July 30, 1991 as Baron Craig of Radley , of Hellhoughton in the County of Norfolk. This makes him a member of the House of Lords, where he belongs to the Crossbencher faction and was its convenor from December 1999 to July 2004 .

He has been with Elisabeth June Derenburg since 1955 and has a son and a daughter with her.

Orders and awards

He was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1967. In 1978 he became a Companion of the Order of the Bath Award, 1980 as Knight Commander ennobled the Order of the Bath and in 1984 Knight Grand Cross collected the Order of the Bath.

In 1984 he became an Honorary Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1986 a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and in 1988 he received an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Science) from Cranfield University .
