career

Albert Kühn learned to play soccer at SV Grün-Weiß Eschenbach in his birthplace. His membership in this association lasted for 66 years. At the age of 14, he was the smallest player in the second team. Since it was taking too long to join the senior team, he had brought his date of birth up to April 1, 1937 without further ado. Incidentally, under this wrong date, the graduate civil engineer played in the Siegen regional league team in 1963/64. In 1954 he started an apprenticeship in Arnsberg and after his return quickly became a regular in the first team.

During a championship game of the reserve team of Sportfreunde Siegen against Eschenbach, the then coach of the Siegen, Jean Paffrath , noticed him and switched to Sportfreunde in 1957. When he was promoted to the 2nd League West , he finished eighth in the 1961/62 round and he had scored six goals in 29 games. With the association selection of Westphalia, he won the national cup of 1962 with a 1-0 win against the Middle Rhine selection. Club colleague Gerhard Neuser was on the half left, Gerhard Kentschke on the left wing and Reinhold Wosab on the right wing alongside the center forward from Siegen. As the highlight of the round, the goalscorer from the Leimbach Stadium made his debut on April 7, 1962 in Hanover in the international match against Italy in the German national soccer team of amateurs . In the 2: 1 success, Lothar Ulsaß , Heinz-Herbert Kreh , Kühn, captain Heinz Höher and Willi Langemann formed the attack of the DFB team. On May 31, Kühn came to his second calling in the friendly game in Merlebach against France in a 3-3 draw and was also able to excel as a goalscorer. On the right wing, Hans-Jürgen Jansen stormed into Merlebach and Gerhard Neuser on the left wing. In defense and midfield, Bernd Patzke and Werner Lungwitz also made their debut in these two games . With the Red-Whites from Siegen, Kühn came fifth in the second division in 1962/63 - he had scored ten goals in 23 league games - and was thus qualified for the new Regionalliga West for the 1963/64 round.

With the former national player Herbert Schäfer as coach and center forward Kühn, the sports fans went into the regional league's debut year with a 1-1 draw on August 4, 1963 against SpVgg Herten. For the first time as a goalscorer - two goals - the center forward excelled on matchday eight in a 3: 3 home draw against Arminia Bielefeld. Despite the spectacular home successes against the champions Alemannia Aachen (2-0) on November 3rd, 1963 in front of 15,000 spectators, the 2-1 win against third-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf (2-1 with a Kühn goal) on November 17th, 1963 and Albert Kühn, the fourth best striker in the west season with 21 goals, did not manage to keep the league. Although the inner storm with Paul Haase, Kühn and Gerhard Neuser and in defense Peter Blusch stood out in the association round , but in 18th place went back to the amateur camp for victories. On the last matchday, May 10, 1964, Siegen and center forward Kühn said goodbye with a 1-1 draw in the Leimbachstadion against Borussia Mönchengladbach from the Regionalliga West.

In total, Kühn played around 650 games in the Sportfreunde jersey from 1957 to 1970. In addition to the two international matches in which he scored three goals, he played ten times in the Westphalia team and took part in two national cup finals. The DFB awarded him the gold medal of honor for his performance , at that time the highest honor for football players after the silver laurel leaf .

He played his last game as a soccer player at the age of 49. After his active career, he worked as a trainer at Schwarz-Weiß Gernsdorf and Grün-Weiß Eschenbach, among others. From January 1, 1969 until his retirement due to old age on May 31, 1989, he worked as a civil engineer at the City of Siegen's structural engineering department.
