The Leimbachstadion is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Siegen . It is the home of the upper division soccer team Sportfreunde Siegen . It is located in the Winchenbach area at the foot of the Rosterberg . In addition to a natural turf playing field , the facility also includes an artificial turf pitch . The owner is the city of Siegen.

history

Twelve years after the end of the war, the Leimbach Stadium, the largest sports arena in Siegerland, was opened on September 22, 1957. The new stadium was considered exemplary in West Germany at the time. However, the grass pitch was not designed as a football pitch, but created by a horticulturist as a useful lawn. The "Leimbach" still flows piped under the stadium. The opening game took place between Sportfreunde Siegen and Hombrucher FV 09 .

The stadium experienced its international premiere on May 27, 1959 when the German amateur national team played against England. Germany won with the Siegen captain Herbert Schäfer , Peter Kunter , Heinz Höher , Werner Olk u. a. 2-0. Around 25,000 spectators in the stadium and several million spectators in front of the television saw the game without borders on August 28, 1968, an entertainment show under the director of the game, Camillo Felgen . 35 participants competed for victories, the city cost 8,500 DM. However, TV money of 100,000 DM flowed back into the region. On October 3, 1982 , 24,728 paying spectators, who saw a 10-2 victory of the old international against a Siegerland selection, ensured the absolute Siegerland spectator record at the nostalgia game of the 1974 world championship eleven with Franz Beckenbauer , Wolfgang Overath , Sepp Maier & Co.

The record number of spectators in a football championship match was on August 6, 1972. At that time, after the Sportfreunde Siegen promotion to the Regionalliga West, 22,339 visitors came to the first home meeting of the Sportfreunde against the relegated Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. BVB won 1-0. In 1975 a covered grandstand was inaugurated. In the catacombs are the areas for the players and the technical equipment, such as heating and power supply. The DFB-Elf won the last international soccer match of the women on September 25th 2005 against Russia 5-1. The best-attended game of the only season of Sportfreunde Siegen in the 2nd Bundesliga was the game against VfL Bochum on November 6, 2005, which the Sportfreunde won 3-0 in front of 17,745 spectators.

The stadium today

After the last expansion, the stadium has a capacity of 19,400 seats, including 2,108 covered seats and 17,292 standing places. It has been approved for 18,716 spectators. The stadium is one of the largest in the Oberliga Westfalen, where sports fans play victories. Since the 2003/2004 season, the stadium has had a floodlight system with a light output of 850 lx. An emergency power generator secures 15 lux on the pitch in the event of a power failure. In 2004, the interior was separated by a 2.50 m high fence in accordance with the requirements of the DFB and a new loudspeaker system was installed. An operations center with the latest video technology is available for the security forces.

After the modernization of the west curve and back straight, the venue had to be renovated again in summer 2005 as Sportfreunde Siegen rose to the 2nd Bundesliga . In the first step, the east curve was equipped with new steps and breakwaters as well as a security fence. In addition, the entrances and cash registers were modernized. In order to fully meet the DFL requirements, the roofing of the back straight is planned to create the required media spaces there. These are currently located under the main stand. In addition, the construction of underfloor heating is being considered in order to meet today's demands on a contemporary stadium. With the relegation to the league, these plans are temporarily put on hold.

In addition to sports fans Siegen, TuS Erndtebrück and 1. FC Kaan-Marienborn have occasionally been using the stadium for so-called risk games in the Regionalliga West or at DFB Cup games.

The artificial turf pitch was completely renewed in summer 2010.

reachability

The Leimbachstadion can be reached via Leimbachstraße, which connects the stadium with the city center and the Siegen-Süd junction on the A 45 . The stadium is also served by the VWS bus line C102 . At home games, the Magolves line, named after the mascot of Sportfreunde Siegen, drives the spectators from Siegen ZOB to the Leimbachstadion.

Others

Earlier plans by a British investor for the new construction of a covered multi-functional arena designed for 20,000 people with an integrated shopping center, cultural center and congress center were shattered after the sporting decline of Sportfreunde Siegen .
