Jean Paffrath , actually Hans Paffrath, also called Paffraths Schäng, (born December 26, 1922 in Cologne-Holweide ; † March 31, 2014 ) was a German football player and coach. The defender made 151 league appearances from 1947 to 1954 in what was then the first-class football Oberliga West , in which he scored seven goals.

Player, 1931 to 1954

With the Red-Whites from Mülheimer SV 06 , the young Paffrath first played in the Gauliga Mittelrhein in the war years , before taking third place in the Gauliga Köln-Aachen with the Cologne team in 1941/42 and in that season for Cologne-Aachen Playing for the Reichsbundpokal against Westmark (3: 1), Bayern (4: 3) and Nordmark (0: 6) was used as a defender. "Schäng" Paffrath grew up at Preußen Dellbrück , the cult club from the Dellbrück district of Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine, and has spent most of his playing career there. After the Second World War , he belonged to the group of players in the black and whites of Bergisch-Gladbacher-Strasse who had qualified in the finals of the Rhine district in 1946/47 together with VfR Cologne and Alemannia Aachen for the Oberliga West, which started in 1947/48 . The powerful left defender in the then practiced World Cup system ran with his teammates through the weeks-long illness of the outstanding goalkeeper Fritz Herkenrath at the beginning of the round, the negative 1:13 point start with 9:25 goals in the first half of the 1947/48 season . However, the defender was able to indicate his qualities as a free-kick and penalty taker with three goals, including the penalty goal on February 29, 1948 for a 1-1 home draw against old champions FC Schalke 04 . On April 18, 1948, the 3-0 home win - three goals by Jupp Schmidt - against TSG Vohwinkel 80 in front of 12,000 spectators in "Et Höffje" brought about a tie with 19:29 points against the team from Bergisches. As a result, playoffs for relegation were announced. Only after four exhaustive arguments (1: 1 n.V .; 0: 0 n.V .; 0: 0; 0: 1) the decision was made. Paffrath and his Prussians competed in the 1948/49 round in the Rheinbezirksliga Group 1; Vohwinkel stayed in the league.

Due to the increased sense of togetherness after school days, training and fans around the corner - Paffrath was able to reach his teammates in Dellbrück by bike in a quarter of an hour - the Prussian eleven stayed together after relegation and were behind Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1948/49 Runner-up. After the success against the runner-up in Group 2, SC West Cologne (4: 3 a.s.) Paffrath and colleagues prevailed in the actual Oberliga qualification round against SpVgg Herten and Fortuna Düsseldorf and were thus back in the Oberliga West in 1949/50. At the same time, 1. FC Köln had also made their league promotion.

The start of the 1949/50 season was successful on September 4, 1949 with a 3-2 home win against Alemannia Aachen. The final triangle of the Prussians was formed by Herkenrath in the gate and Karl Habets and Paffrath in the defense. With the black and yellow from Aachen, the young Jupp Martinelli made his debut on the right wing in the league eleven. On the fifth day of the round, October 2nd, they parted with 1. FC Köln in front of 15,000 spectators with a 1-1 draw. Paffrath acted as a left defender for the Prussians as usual, while player- coach Hennes Weisweiler did this at 1. FC . The second leg decided Hans Schäfer on February 12, 1950 with two goals in front of 25,000 spectators to 2-0 success for the "billy goat" -Elf. The last game day, on May 7th, decided the race for the runner-up. Borussia Dortmund were already champions, but behind them were three teams, 1. FC Köln, FC Schalke 04 and Preußen Dellbrück, tied with 37:21 points each. Paffrath and his Prussians prevailed in the home game against Rhenania Würselen with 4-1 goals. Since local rivals 1. FC Köln and Schalke 04 lost their games at the same time, Dellbrück won the runner-up in the Oberliga West with 39:21 points. Herkenrath (29), Habets (28) and Paffrath (29-2) formed the backbone of the defensive. In the attack, they relied on the qualities of Jupp Schmidt (30-14), Kurt Hardt (27-8) and Walter Severin (30-9).

The final round of the German soccer championship then became the sporting highlight of the Dellbrücker club history. First they prevailed in Koblenz on May 21st with a 1-0 after extra time against SSV Reutlingen . This was followed by the 2-1 success on June 4th in Frankfurt against the defending champion VfR Mannheim . In the semifinals there was a goalless 0-0 win against Kickers Offenbach in Stuttgart on June 11 , before they missed the final with 0-3 goals in the replay eight days later in Oberhausen in front of 45,000 spectators in the sold-out Niederrheinstadion. As early as the 15th minute, the defender Willi Schlömer was out with a torn cruciate ligament and the important left half-forward Kurt Hardt was unable to take part in the finals at all. Paffrath had played all four finals.

Although Herbert Dörner was a great addition to the 1950/51 round, the great momentum was gone. Paffrath completed all 30 league games and scored one goal, with only 28:32 points to eighth place. 1. FC Köln was now number one in Cologne. Before the round, FC President Franz Kremer and coach Weisweiler wanted to bring the defender to the "billy goats". When goalkeeper Herkenrath actually changed sides on the Rhine for the 1951/52 season, Dellbrück was finally moved to the second row. In addition to the difficult personal competitive situation, Paffrath also made the troublesome space issue for the Prussians from the 1948/49 season without their own stadium responsible. The side of the Rhine also had to be switched to “home games”. The Dellbrücker Ball rolled in front of its own audience on the left bank of the Rhine in Cologne-Müngersdorf, precisely where the Cologne league rivals for President Kremer were actually at home. Defender Paffrath completed the last league game for his Prussians on April 20, 1952, in a 2-1 away win at Sportfreunde Katernberg. After 110 league appearances with seven goals, the long-time Prussian captain joined the team from Uhlenkrug, Schwarz-Weiß Essen , for the 1952/53 round . For ETB he was in 17 games and in 1953/54 added his last active round as a major league player at Rheydter SV with a further 24 league games. In Essen and Rheydt he was not only a contract player but also a youth coach. Paffrath had successfully completed his training as a soccer teacher in 1952.

Trainer

The former Dellbrücker Oberliga defender "Schäng" Paffrath took over for the round 1954/55 in the Landesliga Westfalen, Group 2 (South), the Sportfreunde Siegen . After the 4: 3 win after extra time against SuS Menden 09 with equal points - 40:12 each - he won the group championship with victories. After the games for the Westphalia Championship , where the sports fans came third behind the promoters to the 2nd League West, Eintracht Gelsenkirchen and VfB 03 Bielefeld , he represented Westphalia with victories in the games for the German amateur championship . In the group games, the team around the amateur national players Herbert Schäfer and Werner Rarrasch as well as Paul Haase prevailed against SV Bergisch Gladbach, SV Sterkrade 06/07 and FC Neukölln with 11: 1 points. In the semifinals, the team around Willi Gerdau , Heider SV , could not obstruct the winning countries in the 1: 3 defeat, the final. On June 25, 1955, in front of 15,000 spectators in Wetzlar, the Paffrath protégés won the German amateur championship under the direction of FIFA referee Albert Dusch with 5-0 goals against SpVgg Homburg. In the round of 1955/56 Siegen won the relay championship in the regional league group 2 with a 13 point lead over runner-up Menden. In the Westphalia championship, however, SC Dortmund 95 had to be given priority.

In the first year of the merger between Prussia Dellbrück and SC Rapid Köln from July 10, 1957, the Oberligaklub SC Viktoria 04 Köln , 1957/58, the man from Dellbrück led the team from the Müngersdorf cycling track to ninth place in the Oberliga West . Then he vacated his coaching chair for Hennes Weisweiler and in 1958/59 took over Eintracht Gelsenkirchen , the team from the stadium at Südpark, in the 2nd League West. In the 1962/63 round, an interlude at Rheydter SV ended his career as a football coach.
