Josef "Jupp" Schmidt (born August 11, 1922 in Cologne ; † December 20, 2007 ) was a German football player .

Player career

Schmidt began playing football at Preußen Dellbrück when he was six and moved up to the first team in 1947, where he was a player- coach until 1952, in the 1951/52 season . The greatest success of his team was the promotion to the Oberliga West in the 1949/50 season and the second place as a newcomer behind Borussia Dortmund . He also took part in the final round of the German championship and moved into the semi-finals with his team via the last 16 won 1-0 after extra time over SSV Reutlingen and the quarter-finals won 2-1 over VfR Mannheim . The game that remained goalless against Kickers Offenbach on June 11, 1950 in Stuttgart even after extra time was lost on June 18 in Oberhausen in the replay with 0: 3.

From 1952 to 1954 he played 57 point games for Alemannia Aachen , in which he scored 28 goals. The cup final against Rot-Weiss Essen , which he lost 2-1 in Düsseldorf's Rheinstadion on May 1, 1953 , after five previous cup games, should have been his greatest sporting success. Then, at the age of only 28, he ended his football career.

Coaching career

Immediately after the end of his active football career began his coaching career, where he initially trained the first team of Prussia Dellbrück until 1957 in the Oberliga West, before the team merged with SC Rapid Cologne to SC Viktoria Cologne . The 1957/58 season he coached the Wuppertaler SV , who had to relegate to the second to last at the end of the season in the 2nd Oberliga West. Later he worked as a coach at Bonn's FV 01 , before finally coaching SC Viktoria Köln in the second-class Regionalliga West from 1967 to 1969 .
