Josef "Jupp" Martinelli (born March 19, 1936 in Bardenberg ) is a former German soccer player who was active at Alemannia Aachen from 1954 to 1970 in the Oberliga West , Regionalliga West and the Bundesliga . He has been an honorary member of Alemannia since 2014 .

Player career

Oberliga West, 1954–1963

At the age of 18, "Jupp" Martinelli, who came from his own youth, made his debut at Alemannia Aachen in the Oberliga West. He made his debut in the opening game of the 1954/55 season on August 22, 1954 in the home game against FC Schalke 04 in a 4: 3 win, where he equalized to 2: 2 in the 48th minute of the game. In the first season 1954/55 he came to 21 games and 11 goals. By 1963 he developed into an all-rounder in the "Tivoli" -Elf. From right defender , right runner, center runner, right winger, half right and center forward, he went through almost all positions with success, depending on the needs of the team. Personally, he favored the center-forward position in the early years. In the rounds of 1954/55, 1956/57 and 1957/58 he was also the most successful attacker of the Alemannia. From 1954 to 1963 he played 255 league games with 72 goals for the club from the imperial city. A big disappointment for Martinelli, his club and the supporters in 1963 was the fact that they were not considered for the new Bundesliga. Martinelli had played in all 30 games of the 1962/63 round and, as a constantly driving right runner, contributed to fifth place, tied with Münster.

Regionalliga West, 1963-1967

For Martinelli and Aachen in the Regionalliga West only the motto "immediate promotion to the Bundesliga" applied. After winning the championship title in 1964, the failure against Hannover 96 in the promotion round meant another low blow.

After the runner-up in 1965 behind Borussia Mönchengladbach , however, they failed again in the promotion round. As a result, the entry via VfL Osnabrück, RW Oberhausen, Hanover 96 and Schalke 04 in the DFB Cup until the final on May 22nd in Hanover did not stick in the memory. Martinelli's squad lost 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund . In the year of the soccer world championship in England in 1966 it was only enough to reach third place in the regional league and it was completely removed from promotion. In the fourth year of the Regionalliga, 1966/67, the championship title was celebrated again and also in the promotion round against Offenbach, 1. FC Saarbrücken, Göttingen 05 and Tennis Borussia Berlin the entry into the Bundesliga. The captain "Jupp" Martinelli had completed 130 games with 57 goals in the Regionalliga West from 1963 to 1967 for the "Black and Yellow".

Bundesliga, 1967-1970

Martinelli was also Alemannia Aachen's best defensive midfielder in the Bundesliga. He played 84 Bundesliga games in the three years that Aachen was part of the Bundesliga and scored five goals; including the first two in the club's history in a 2-1 win at home against Karlsruher SC . In the first year of the Bundesliga in 1967/68 he was missing in only one game. Aachen finished 11th in the table as a newcomer. Before the 1968/69 round, Alemannia carried out a four-week trip to South America in June / July 1968 to Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay. The start with 8: 2 points after the first five games did not speak against the exhausting journey, the final result in the table did not at all. On July 27, 1968, at the debut game at Tivoli against Arsenal London, the team captain Jupp Martinelli was honored by President Leo Guide with flowers on the occasion of his 700th game in the "First". In 1969, Martinelli's team became German runner-up behind FC Bayern Munich . Thanks to a 1-0 away win at Hertha BSC and a simultaneous defeat of Borussia Mönchengladbach at Werder Bremen on the last day of the season, Alemannia was able to outperform the Gladbach team. Josef "Jupp" Martinelli ended his playing career at Alemannia in 1970 at the age of 34, after his team was relegated from the Bundesliga. In the 1970/71 season he added another round to Roda Kerkrade before he returned to Aachen and was active as an amateur footballer at Westwacht Aachen for several years.

Statements about "Jupp" Martinelli

“Of course, I have never forgotten the all-round skills of Jupp Martinelli, a warrior, an inimitable role model in fighting, a center forward like center runner, goal getter like defensive artist, part of the legendary midfield row Martinelli, Zebec, Breuer , a master of fair play - and ultimately for everyone too simply 'dr Jupp'. At that time - in his active time - I only admired him. Today (1996) I am grateful for the 'you' that he offered me many years ago. "

“In 1949 I came to Aachen as a player for Alemannia and from 1954 I played in the first team with Jupp Martinelli, who came from his own youth. He played a center forward, got templates, was cleared, scored goals and was accepted straight away. Jupp was incredibly ambitious, which you have to be as a footballer, even if he sometimes exaggerated it a bit, about which the others can sing a song. He loved football, just like me, and when we went out on the pitch and the referee whistled, the whole team would fight to the end. In 1967 I returned to Alemannia as a coach and Jupp Martinelli was my extended arm on the field. He was the captain and head of the team, could pull the others along and they listened to him. Every player who came to Aachen knew him, and if he wanted to play, he had to try to be good friends with him. But that wasn't that easy, because the Jupp could be quite uncomfortable, but always in the interests of the team and the club. "

“When I came to Tivoli from Borussia Brand in 1963 , there were Jupp Martinelli, Herbert Krisp or Branko Zebec player personalities, yes idols, who were respected. Tips and advice from the elderly during training were gratefully accepted, and only when it was said 'I am the Jupp' did you really feel that you belonged there. "

job

The high school student completed a career as an inspector with the city of Aachen and later rose to the position of head of office. With the amateurs of Westwacht, he let the top athlete's engine slowly fade out.

After he had acquired his coaching license, he temporarily looked after the A-Juniors of Alemannia Aachen and for a game in 1981 also the professionals on an interim basis.
