Archie Thompson (born October 23, 1978 in Otorohanga , New Zealand ; actually Archibald Gerald Thompson ) is a former Australian football player of Pakeh and Papua New Guinean origin.

Career

The Australian striker played his first international match against Colombia on February 28, 2001 . He became known worldwide on April 11, 2001. In his third international match he scored 13 goals in a 31-0 win against American Samoa in the Australian seaside resort of Coffs Harbor . With that, both he and his national team set a new goal record at national team level.

In a total of 46 international matches, Thompson scored 28 goals, making him third among the top Australian goalscorers. (As of April 13, 2016)

Thompson won the 2004 OFC Nations Cup with the Australian national team and took part in the 2005 Confederations Cup in Germany .

On December 7, 2012, Thompson scored after his substitution in the 56th minute in the game against Guam in qualifying for the East Asian Championship 2013 within five minutes the fastest recognized hat trick in an official international game. He scored in the 9-0 victory of the Australians against the world number-181. in the 59th, 63rd and 65th minutes.
