Daniel "Danny" Allsopp (born August 10, 1978 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian soccer player .

Club career

Started his career in Australia until 1998

Danny Allsopp began his active career after a scholarship at the Victorian Institute of Sport in 1995 with Croydon City in the Victorian Premier League (VPL). In the summer of 1995 he moved to South Melbourne FC in the National Soccer League . After he came only sporadically as a substitute in his second year at Melbourne, he joined the league rivals and local rivals Carlton SC in 1997 , but after a short time he loaned him to Port Melbourne Sharks in the VPL.

Seven years in England, 1998–2005

In 1998 he was invited by the then third division club Manchester City to test training in England and finally signed by manager Joe Royle for the transfer fee of 10,000 pounds. In his first season with the Citizens , Allsopp was still used regularly and contributed to promotion with four goals. In the second division season 1999/2000 he was rarely used and was therefore initially loaned to Notts County for a month at the end of 1999 , in February and March 2000 he played for a few weeks on loan at AFC Wrexham . Manchester City meanwhile managed to march through to the Premier League , which further reduced Allsopp's chances of playing.

In the 2000/01 season he was loaned to Bristol City , in December 2000 he played again for Notts County. There he scored four times in three league games and was then firmly committed to the third division for £ 300,000. In the following three seasons he scored a total of 50 goals in 115 competitive games for Notts. In the summer of 2003, the financially troubled club had to sell its top earners, including Allsopp. The ambitious fourth division club Hull City signed Allsopp for an unpublished transfer fee. The striker scored 15 goals in his first season at Hull and thus played a decisive role in the promotion to the third division.

Successes in the A-League, 2005-2009

In spring 2005 he dissolved his contract with Hull to sign in the newly formed Australian A-League with Melbourne Victory . His first season with Melbourne was disappointing for the attacker, he only scored four times, Melbourne clearly missed the finals as seventh in the table. The 2006/07 season was much more successful for him. He benefited from the offensive qualities of newcomer Fred , who was best in the league in this statistic with nine assists and formed the most dangerous storm duo in the league in attack with Archie Thompson . While Thompson finished the regular season with ten goals, Allsopp was able to get the title of top scorer with eleven goals. After finishing the regular season in first place, they also dominated the finals. In the Grand Final against Adelaide United they won 6-0 and thus the Australian championship. Allsopp remained without a hit in the final despite numerous great opportunities.

After another weaker 2007/08 season , in which the reigning champions missed the finals with fifth place in the league, they won the championship again in 2008/09 . Allsopp scored only one less than top scorer Shane Smeltz with eleven goals , and he also scored once in each of the two semi-finals against Adelaide. The final, in which one again faced Adelaide, was over for him after 65 minutes when he was sent off by referee Matthew Breeze after a pack formation of the field. The red card was canceled by the Australian Association a few days after the final.

Stay in Qatar and the MLS, 2009–2010

Shortly after the start of the 2009/10 season, Allsopp moved to the Qatari club Al-Rayyan and signed a financially lucrative contract there. After coach Paulo Autuori brought Omani striker Amad Al Hosni back to Al-Rayyan at the turn of the year, Allsopp played 3 + 1 after just a few months due to the Asian foreigner regulation (max. Four foreigners, at least one of them from Asia) despite six goals in twelve games. No longer a role in the further planning and received the transfer approval. In early 2010, he then signed a two-year contract with DC United in the North American Major League Soccer . Allsopp scored five goals in 23 league games for DC, but at the end of the season the team was bottom of the table with six wins from 30 games.

Return to Melbourne 2011–2012

At the end of December 2010, Melbourne Victory announced the re-engagement of Allsops by mid-2013.

National team

Allsopp took part in 1995 with the Australian U-17 selection at the U-17 World Cup in Ecuador. He was the top scorer there with five tournament goals and reached the quarter-finals with the selection, in which they failed to Brazil. Two years later he played with the U-20s at the Junior World Championship in Malaysia, but only made two short appearances when reaching the round of 16. In the Australian Olympic selection, it was considered several times between 1997 and 2000, but ultimately remained unconsidered for the 2000 Summer Olympics in his own country.

In June 2007 he was appointed to the senior national team for a friendly against Uruguay for the first time and made his international debut as a substitute. Less than a year later, he played another game in a friendly against Ghana. He played his first competitive game for Australia in qualifying for the 2011 Asian Cup against Indonesia in January 2009.
