Victorian Institute of Sport
The Victorian Institute of Sport , or VIS for short, is an institution financed by the Victorian government to promote and support top athletes. The institute was founded in 1990 as a trust company and reports directly to the Ministry of Sports. The headquarters of the VIS is located in the Olympic Park in Melbourne , formerly known as the Glasshouse . The swimming competitions were held here at the 1956 Summer Olympics .
Around 400 athletes are looked after and supported by trainers, sports medicine specialists, nutritionists and psychologists.
Among other things, football , bowls , canoeing , cycling , diving , horse riding , golf , gymnastics , hockey , netball , rowing , sailing , swimming , tennis , track and field , triathlon , water polo , weightlifting and winter sports offered.
