Matthew "Matt" Welsh (born November 18, 1976 in Melbourne ) is an Australian swimmer. He specializes in the back and butterfly layers .

At the 2000 Olympic Games in his native Australia, Welsh won silver over the 100 m backseat as well as the Australian 4 × 100 m individual medley. He also won bronze over the 200 m back.

At the 1998 World Swimming Championships , he won gold with the 4 × 100 m individual relay.

At the 2001 World Swimming Championships he won gold over 100 m back and with the 4 × 100 m individual relay. He also reached third place over 50 m back.

Two years later at the World Championships in Barcelona he won gold over 50 m butterfly and silver over 50 and 100 m back.

In 2005 he won a silver medal over 50 m back at the World Cup.

At the 2007 World Championships in his hometown of Melbourne, he won gold once again with the Australians' 4 × 100 m relay. In individual races, however, he could no longer win a medal.

In addition, Welsh won a total of seven gold, five silver and two bronze medals at short course world championships. At the Commonwealth Games , he won a total of four gold and two silver medals.

Welsh is married to Australian TV star Lauren Newton , their first child Sam Albert Newton Welsh was born on January 19, 2008.
