Life

Florent Manaudou was born into a sports-loving family. His mother Olga, a native of the Netherlands , played for the badminton selection in her home country. His father, Jean-Luc Manaudou, a bank clerk, volunteered for a handball team . Manaudou's four-year-old sister is the successful freestyle swimmer Laure Manaudou , Olympic champion and multiple world and European champion over the 400-meter freestyle course. According to his own statements, he benefited from his sister's success ("Thanks to her, doors opened for me more easily, even if I had to do a lot to prove that I am not just Laure's brother.").

In 2008 Manaudou failed to qualify for the Beijing Summer Olympics . In the following years he specialized in the short butterfly and freestyle course. At the French Championships in 2011, he finished second over the 50-meter butterfly in a time of 23.66 seconds, behind Frédérick Bousquet (23.60 s). Then Manaudou was appointed to the French national team for the World Swimming Championships in Shanghai . There he reached the 50-meter butterfly final, where he finished fifth in a time of 23.49 seconds. With the French 4 × 100-meter medley relay with Jérémy Stravius , Hugues Duboscq , Manaudou and Fabien Gilot (3: 36.21 min), the World Cup final with ninth place was just missed.

In 2012 Manaudou had to admit defeat to Amaury Leveaux (21.93 s) in the French Championships over the 50-meter freestyle distance in 21.95 seconds . He was then considered for the national team for the Summer Olympics in London . With a personal best of 21.86 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle, he qualified as the sixth fastest of the semi-finals in 21.80 seconds for a place in the final. As the youngest participant in the final, Manaudou managed to improve his fastest time to 21.34 seconds and win the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle ahead of the American Cullen Jones (21.54 s) and the world record holder and defending champion César Cielo from Brazil (21 , 59 s) to win. He was the first French to win the Olympic Games over this route.

After his success at the Olympic Games, Manaudou won five gold medals at the European Short Course Championships in Chartres in November 2012 ; in addition to the title in the 50-meter freestyle, he was successfully used in the two freestyle and medley relays (men and mixed). A month later at the short course world championships in Istanbul Manaudou won silver in 20.88 seconds behind Russian Vladimir Morozov (20.55 s) and bronze over the 50-meter chest distance in 26.33 seconds behind Norwegian Aleksander Hetland (26 , 30 s) and the Slovenian Damir Dugonjič (26.33 s).

At the following World Swimming Championships in 2013 in Barcelona, Manaudou reached the finals in the 50-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly, but could not build on the previous individual successes. When the Brazilian César Cielo (21.32 s) won the freestyle race, he only finished fifth in 21.64 seconds. On the butterfly route, he again only reached eighth place in Cielo's victory (23.01 s) in 23.35 seconds. With the French 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay (together with Yannick Agnel , Fabien Gilot and Jérémy Stravius ), Manaudou then won his first gold medal on the long track in 3: 11.18 minutes before the relays from the United States and Russia. In 2014, Manaudou became the most successful pool swimmer at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin with four titles. In the 50-meter freestyle he undercut his best time from the Olympic Games by 0.02 seconds (21.32 s) and set a new championship record, in the 100-meter freestyle he also set a personal best with 47.98 seconds . Over the 50-meter butterfly, Manaudou shared the title in 23.00 seconds with Jauhen Zurkin from Belarus at the same time . He also won gold with the French 100-meter freestyle relay (together with Mehdy Metella , Fabien Gilot and Jérémy Stravius) with a championship record of 3: 11.64 minutes. After the European Championship successes, Manaudou stated that he would henceforth concentrate on the 100-meter distance and aim for the world record in the 50-meter freestyle.

At the 2014 Short Course World Championships , Manaudou was world champion in the 50 meter freestyle in record time. He was also world champion with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and runner-up world champion with the 4 × 50 m individual relay. A year later at the 2015 World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia, Manaudou won three gold medals (50 m freestyle, 50 m butterfly, 4 × 100 m freestyle) and was then named France's athlete of the year by the sports newspaper L'Équipe ("Champion des champions France" ) chosen.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Manaudou won the silver medal behind the US relay in his first competition, the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. He secured another silver medal in Rio in the individual race over 50 meters freestyle.

Florent Manaudou trains with Romain Barnier and is a member of the CN Marseille swimming club . He counts the Russian swimmer Alexander Popow among his role models.
