Peter Nocke (born October 25, 1955 in Langenberg ) is a former German swimming athlete, European champion (9 times) and world champion.

Sports education and career

As a member of Wasserfreunde Wuppertal , he was trained by Heinz Hoffmann and Ernst-Joachim Küppers . 1973 saw his breakthrough as a swimming athlete. From 1974 to 1977 he dominated his German and European opponents in the 100 and 200 m freestyle, where he was distinguished by his elegant swimming style, which enabled him to catch up even after a mediocre start and then defeat the competitors in the final meters in the final battle . He was always German champion and won eight individual titles on these routes without ever being beaten; He secured a ninth individual title in 1977 when he also triumphed over 400 m freestyle.

Unconquered, he also finished the European Championships in Vienna in 1974 and Jönköping in 1977, when he defeated all the competition in both the 100 m and 200 m freestyle. Together with the successes in the relay, he won nine European championships and one world championship (4 × 200-meter freestyle relay). In his great individual successes, he defeated his greatest rival Klaus Steinbach (regularly beaten at the German Championships and the 1974 European Championships over 200 m freestyle by Peter Nocke and relegated to 2nd place), Wladimir Bure (at the 1974 and 1977 European Championships from Winner Peter Nocke over 100 m freestyle defeated in the fight for the title), Andrei Krylow (at the European Championships 1977 over 200 m freestyle defeated by Peter Nocke), Marcello Guarducci , Werner Lampe and Frank Wennmann (at the German championships 1977 over 400 m freestyle fought down with the last of his strength by Peter Nocke).

Only at the World Championships and the Olympic Games did he have to admit defeat to the stronger Americans, although he won the bronze medal in the 100 m freestyle at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal (behind James Montgomery and Jack Babashoff , but ahead of Klaus Steinbach and Wladimir Bure ) , and won and won the title at the World Championships in Cali (1975) with the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay when the Americans were disqualified. He also won many victories at the Masters (swimming seniors) at German championships and European championships. On the occasion of the European Masters Championships in Palma 2001, Peter Nocke triumphed with four individual gold medals in the 100 m butterfly and 100 m freestyle (he defeated the German Peter Kauch), over 50 m butterfly (he defeated the British Simon Veale) and over 50 m Freestyle (he defeated the Russian Nikolai Chibarev). At the German championships in 2007 in Regensburg he won again and defeated all opponents in the age group 50 in the 50 m freestyle and the butterfly, where he defeated Ernst Denzer and Herbert Lindacher in particular.

Honors

For winning the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Montreal, he received the silver laurel leaf from Federal President Walter Scheel . Chancellor Helmut Schmidt received the award at the reception of the German Olympic team in Bonn in October 1976. This award complemented the numerous victories in his successful sports career.

Sport and art

Peter Nocke is one of the top German athletes of his active time who served as a model for the sculpture cycle OLYMPIA by the sculptor Arno Breker . The artist designed, among other things, the cam bronze "The winner - Before the start", portrait heads and drawings. Nocke's friends and contemporaries such as Walter Kusch , Jürgen Hingsen , Klaus Steinbach, Eberhard Gienger and the Olympic champion Ulrike Nasse-Meyfarth also stood in the same studio as models in order to be “in one Artwork to be remembered by posterity ”. Almost at the same time, the portraitist Kurt Arentz created a bronze bust of Ulrike Meyfarth.

Even after his active sports days, Nocke remained connected to swimming by promoting talent. He was also loyal to his long-term home in Wuppertal .
