Vladimir Valeryevich Bure

Vladimir Valeryevich Bure ( Russian Владимир Валерьевич Буре ; * December 4, 1950 in Norilsk ) is a former Russian swimmer and multiple medalist at the Olympic Games , World and European Championships on the short crawl course.

His father Valeri Wladimirowitsch Bure (1912–1974), a Soviet water polo player and coach at the time, was the great-grandson of the Swiss watchmaker and watch dealer Pawel Bure (actually Paul Leopold Buhré; 1810–1882). His father Karl Buhré opened a successful watch shop in Saint Petersburg in 1815, which was continued by his son.

Wladimir Bure won the bronze medal in the 100 m freestyle at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . At the European Championships in Vienna in 1974 he started the 100 m freestyle as a favorite, but was defeated by the German Peter Nocke by a wafer-thin by a hundredth of a second. At the subsequent European Championships in Jönköping in 1977 , he failed to get the longed-for revenge and had to give up again over the same distance to the clearly superior cam this time.

Vladimir Bure is the father of the two ice hockey players Pawel Bure and Valeri Bure .
