Werner Lampe (born November 30, 1952 in Hanover ) is a former German swimmer who started as a crawl, dolphin and back specialist for the Federal Republic of Germany . He won medals at the Olympic Games and was world and European champion with the relay. Werner Lampe was the first swimmer in the world to swim bald at the Olympic Games in Munich so that he could be a few hundredths of a second faster. After his swimming career, he became an entrepreneur and franchisee.

Life

Werner Lampe is married and has two sons. He lives in Lehrte- Arpke near Hanover. He is the younger brother of the equally successful butterfly swimmer Hans Lampe . His son Oliver Lampe took part in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta .

Between 1969 and 1976 Werner Lampe took part in national and international swimming competitions and the Olympic Games. Today, Lampe owns five branches of the McDonald’s franchise fast food chain in Celle , Lehrte near Hanover , Peine , Gifhorn and Bergen . Parallel to his entrepreneurial activity , he received his doctorate in 2005. phil. and works as a motivational speaker.

Sporting successes

Werner Lampe won the titles over 200 meters freestyle, 400 meters freestyle and 1500 meters freestyle at the German Swimming Championships in 1969 . He repeated this triple victory in 1970 , 1971 and 1973 . In 1975 and 1976 he won the 400-meter and 1500-meter distances, in 1972 and 1974 he only won over 400 meters, on which he won eight championship titles in a row.

At the 1970 European Championships in Barcelona , Lampe won silver in the 1500 meter freestyle behind Hans Fassnacht . With the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay, they both won gold together.

For these sporting successes, he and Fassnacht were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 30, 1970.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Lampe competed in the finals of the 200 meter freestyle with a shaved head in order to offer less resistance in the water, and won the bronze medal. Lamp was visually in contrast to Mark Spitz , who won seven gold medals in Munich, although he competed with a mustache. Lampe took seventh place in the 400 meter freestyle final. In 1973 the first swimming world championship took place in Belgrade . The German 4 × 200-meter relay won the bronze medal behind the Americans and the Australians with the cast of Klaus Steinbach, Werner Lampe, Peter Nocke and Folkert Meeuw . At the 1974 European Swimming Championships in Vienna, the 4 × 200 meter relay won gold.

At the 1975 World Swimming Championships in Cali , the Americans dominated again. Their 4 × 200-meter relay was disqualified and the relay from Germany won gold with the cast of Klaus Steinbach, Werner Lampe, Hans-Joachim Geisler and Peter Nocke. In 1976 at the Olympic Games in Montreal, Lampe was eliminated over 200 meters and over 400 meters in the lead. The 4 × 200 meter relay started in the order Steinbach, Nocke, Lampe and Geisler. The last British swimmer Brian Brinkley took Geisler from over three and a half seconds and secured the British with a lead of 0.16 seconds the bronze medal over the German world champions.

Werner Lampe started for the Swimming and Sportfreunde Bonn in 1905 until 1972 and was trained there by Gerhard Hetz . Then he moved to SV Würzburg 05 and trained under Reiner Siewert .
