history

The SSF Bonn was founded on February 3, 1905 as a Bonn swimming club and joined in 1921 with the Bonn ladies swimming club , then in 1937 with the competing United Water Friends Bonn 09 to the swimming sports friends Bonn 05 e. V. together. In the meantime, today's canoeing department was founded in 1928. In 1952 the 1st German Badminton Club Bonn was founded in the SSF , which dominated the German badminton scene in the early years of competitive badminton in Germany. With Wolfgang Bochow and Irmgard Latz there were also internationally very successful players in the ranks of the 1st DBC. In 1966 the Swimming and Sportfreunde Bonn had 2000 members, in 1968 Gerhard Hetz was appointed full-time swimming coach (he trained the Bonn swimmers until 1973). In 1970 the club took over the indoor swimming pool with a 50 m pool in the Sportpark Nord . In the same year, Hans Riegel becomes the first president of SSF Bonn. A number of new departments are opened in the 1970s and the 6,000th member is welcomed in 1974. This is the reason for the renaming to the current club name in 1978, which better represents the considerably expanded range of sports on offer.

In 1981 a full-time managing director was hired for the first time, and in 1994 Reiner Schreiber became the new president. In 1999 the association had 5600 members and the International SSF Swimming Festival became a permanent and nationally recognized event. In 2005 the SSF Bonn celebrated its centenary with more than 7,500 members. At the beginning of 2018, the SSF Bonn had around 10,000 members.
