Masters swimming

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Masters swimming is the active senior sports in swimming . In swimming competitions, they are divided into age groups from 20 years (in 5 year steps) for evaluation. In Germany, the German Swimming Association has around 25,000 active master swimmers in 1,188 clubs (as of 2012). Among them are some former competitive swimmers, such as Christel Schulz .

Competitions

Masters competitions in Germany take the form of short and long track competitions both at regional level (e.g. district, state Masters Championships) and at national level (German Masters Championships). Internationally, the European and World Masters Championships take place. The master's regulations only apply to swimming events marked accordingly. Masters swimmers are still entitled to participate in competitions with an open rating (regardless of age).

particularities

The regulations in Germany are presented here. There are similar regulations in German-speaking countries in Austria ( Austrian Swimming Association ) and Switzerland ( Swiss Swimming Association ).

There are additional sections in the competition rules for Masters competitions. In Germany, the German Swimming Association (DSV) applies the "Competition Regulations Swimming Masters (MS)" (with §151 to §160).

The following special regulations differ from the swimming section, which applies to all DSV swimming competitions:

  • The start may be made from the starting block as well as from the pool edge or from the swimming position with one hand on the pool edge (§156 Section 1 No.
  • When swimming with butterflies, the chest leg kick may be performed as an alternative to the dolphin kick (§150 Section 1 No. h)
  • further regulations concern the run composition (§150)

Health aspects

Due to the physical strain and the decreasing physical performance, there is seldom an emergency doctor in competitions in master swimming. In order to prevent these circumstances, every participant in swimming competitions of the German Swimming Association in Germany must have a medical certificate on sports health, which must be renewed annually. This rule also applies to Masters swimmers.
