Johannes Peter "Hans" Riegel (born March 10, 1923 in Bonn ; † October 15, 2013 there ) was born as the first son of the married couple Gertrud and Hans Riegel . His father was the founder of the Haribo company . In 1946, together with his brother Paul (1926–2009), he took over management of the company and expanded it into a confectionery group.

Life

After primary school, Hans Riegel attended the Aloisiuskolleg in Bad Godesberg and passed his Abitur there. It was not until 1944 that he was drafted into military service. He became an American prisoner of war, from which he returned in 1946. After high school bar worked in the company where he was responsible for shipping and marketing, and studied in parallel at the University of Bonn economics and was there in 1951 with a thesis on the development of the world sugar economy during and after the second World War, graduated .

In 1953, Riegel was elected the first president of the German Badminton Association , which was founded at the time , after becoming the first German badminton master in men's doubles on the same weekend . In the same year he had the first German badminton hall ( Haribo Center ) built in Bonn . In 1954 and 1955 he won two more championship titles in badminton, this time in mixed with Luise Stuch-Schmitz. In 1956 he edited the “ Handbook of Badminton Sports ” together with Josef Holthausen . In the same year he donated the challenge cup named after him, which the German team champion in badminton has received since then .

In May 2008, Warren Buffett paid a visit to Germany and Haribo to join the family business. The bar, which was already 85 years old and childless at the time, was not interested in the entry of the US investor. Riegel has led the Haribo company since the death of his brother Paul Riegel in 2009 together with his nephews Hans Arndt Riegel and Hans Guido Riegel.

Riegel has regularly extended his license as a helicopter pilot. Since 2009 he has appeared in public with the hotel manager Anna-Maria Bischof, who is 40 years his junior.

In July 2013, Riegel had to undergo brain surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. During rehabilitation, Riegel died of heart failure on October 15, 2013, at the age of 90. He found his final resting place in the family grave in Bonn's southern cemetery .

Riegel had been Austrian citizens since 1991. Austria was the adopted home of Riegel, where the passionate hunter had an estate with hunting in Hieflau ( Styria ). Riegel had announced during his lifetime that he would contribute his share in the company to his Austrian private foundation. Due to his strong connection to Styria, its deputy governor , Hermann Schützenhöfer ( ÖVP ), praised the deceased's work for Styria and Styrian tourism.

Honors

Because of his many services, Hans Riegel was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1994. The decisive factors were his social commitment in his hometown of Pech as well as his services to the promotion of sport.

In October 2009, Riegel was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor by the French Foreign Ministry .

In 2009 he also received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria .

Dr. Hans Riegel specialist prizes

Since 2006 the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation in cooperation with the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn the Dr. Hans Riegel specialist prizes. They are used to honor particularly good scientific work by secondary school students in various scientific subjects.

All pupils who have completed or achieved a technical or specialist thesis or a special learning achievement in the subjects of biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics or physics are eligible to participate.

From the 2010/11 school year, the schools with the first place will also be awarded a material prize.

Since the 2009/10 school year, these Dr. Hans Riegel specialist prizes awarded at the German universities in Augsburg, FU Berlin, RU Bochum, Bonn, TU Dresden, Düsseldorf, Erlangen, Mainz, LMU Munich, Münster (ICBF), Oldenburg and Potsdam. This competition has also been held at the Austrian universities of Linz and Graz since 2010. The universities of Vienna and Salzburg have also been holding the competition since 2011.
