The urban southern cemetery in Bonn is located between the present-day districts of Dottendorf and Friesdorf ; this used to be the southern outskirts of Bonn to the formerly independent city of Bad Godesberg . It is the second largest cemetery of the federal city and stands as a monument under monument protection .

The south cemetery was given its name in 1910 to delimit the north cemetery, initially known as the “new cemetery” . Both the cemetery itself and its infrastructure have expanded over the decades. It is limited to the east by the Bonn-Koblenz railway line and to the west by Servatiusstrasse, where the main entrance is located.

While numerous famous personalities from the 18th and 19th centuries were buried in the old cemetery in the city center, some important politicians from the early years of the Federal Republic of Germany are buried in the south cemetery due to its proximity to the former government district . Individual well-known people from science and business are also buried here.
