Josef Niesen (born January 8, 1963 in Bonn - Dransdorf ) is a German painter , graphic artist , author and publisher .

Life

Niesen attended the Institute for Training in Fine Arts and Art Therapy (IBKK) Bochum and the Free Art Academy Rhein / Ruhr in Essen. Since 1991 Niesen has been working as a freelance painter, graphic artist and author. From 1997 to 2008 he was a member of the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK) Bonn, which he headed from 1999 to 2003 as Vice Chairman. From 2002 to 2008 he was a member of the artist group Semikolon .

After a surrealist phase and a long phase of abstraction , Niesen turned to landscape painting in recent years . His compositions are often large-format, leave room for the sky that fills the picture and often push the landscape itself to the bottom of the picture. He often uses the spatula technique. The art historian Rapp-Neumann writes: "With their difficult, subtle coloring, his pictures are a pleasure that not only visually but holistically appeals to and touches the viewer [...] His recent works are still characterized by compelling aesthetics, technical sophistication and subtle delicacy in color and shape. "

In his pictures, Niesen is often concerned with the confrontation between surface and line, exploring surfaces and leaving visible traces of creativity. His work is "impulsive, but by no means unbridled, spirited and disciplined".

His picture cycles Industrie und Stadt with large-format oil paintings of Bonn's Südstadt and the surrounding industries as well as reflections on Olivier Messiaen (1997) based on his organ composition Nativité du Seigneur received particular attention, also in the press .

For the cath. Parish church in Viersen-Bockert , Niesen created the altarpiece and two memorial plaques for the crypt of the Bonn Minster (for Theresia von Lisieux and for Pope Johannes XXIII. )

Niesen has been an author since 2006. In the same year his first book was the Bonner Personenlexikon (Bouvier-Verlag), a second edition in 2008 and a third, greatly expanded and improved edition in 2011. Since 2008, Niesen has also been writing articles for the Bonn history papers published by the Bonn City Archives and for the Rheinische Geschichte portal of the LVR Institute for Regional Studies and Regional History . In addition, he writes biographical articles for important lexical works such as the Biographisch-Bibliographische Kirchenlexikon (BBK), the Austrian Biographical Lexicon (ÖBL) published by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the lexicon of persecuted musicians of the Nazi era , which is published by the research center of the University of Hamburg is published.

In 2017, Niesen founded the Bonn Buch Verlag with a focus on regional literature about Bonn and the Rhineland. He lives with his wife Anna Niesen in Bonn-Kessenich . The couple has been married since 2016.
