The Saarland Triathlon Union (STU) is the official umbrella organization of all Saarland triathlon clubs and departments. She is a member of the German Triathlon Union . The STU looks after around 1,000 triathletes in 38 clubs in Saarland (as of April 2013).

history

In March 1985, Klaus Strauch from Schmelz invited to a founding meeting. The first triathlon in Saarland in St. Wendel (short and medium distance) with Saarland championships took place in August . In 1987 the 4th German championship was held in St. Wendel and at the Bostalsee.

In 1990, the triathlon department of TV Düppenweiler, the nucleus of the STU, gave rise to the new Tri-Sport Saar-Hochwald association, which is the first Saarland club to focus entirely on triathlon. Today the TSSH is the largest triathlon club in Saarland. In 1990, 1998 and 1999 the German Senior Championships took place in Losheim am See. In 1990, the then Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer started there as a guest of honor . The tri-team Köllerbach made it into the first triathlon league in 1993, but was only able to hold out there for one year.

A special highlight was the ITU - Duathlon World Championship of the Elite in 1998 in St. Wendel. In 2008 Jan Frodeno , who started for the Tri-Sport Saar-Hochwald, won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. In 2010 Steffen Justus , who competes for the Saarlouis triathlon friends, became vice world champion. Justus and Frodeno (now LAZ Saarbrücken) qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where they achieved 6th place (Frodeno) and 16th place (Justus).

League operation

Due to its size, the Saarland does not have an independent league. Saarland triathlon teams start in the state league of Rhineland-Palatinate or in higher leagues .

Triathlon Team Saar

The triathlon department of Lauftrefffreunde Marpingen e. V. owns a team that starts in the German Triathlon League (DTL). In 2010, when the team had the right to start the regional league, it transferred it to the Saarland Triathlon Union. As part of a youth development project for the U23 age group, the STU strengthened the LTF Marpingen league team with cadre athletes and renamed them "Triathlon Team Saar". The goal of promotion to the first Bundesliga was achieved at the end of 2012.
Since the 2013 season, the team, now under the name “Bromelain-POS Team Saar”, has been competing in the first division.

Award

The Saarland Triathlon Union was awarded the Hermann Neuberger Prize in 2009 for its exemplary talent detection, talent promotion and competitive sport development. In 2015 she was awarded the Hermann Neuberger plaque.
