Steffen Justus (born April 15, 1982 in Jena ) is a former German triathlete . He is junior European champion (2000), third in the triathlon world championship U23 (2003), triathlon vice world champion (2010) and German champion in the triathlon short distance (2010) and sprint distance (2011, 2014).

Career

Steffen Justus is the son of the athlete Klaus-Peter Justus (* 1951). In 1993, when the junior boss of the Rennsteiglauf celebrated its premiere, he achieved second place in his age group. He was active as a runner until 1997 and then started triathlon. Justus has been a member of the German national team for running and triathlon since 1998 and exclusively triathlon since 2001.

Junior European Champion Triathlon 2000

In July 2000 he was triathlon junior European champion in the Netherlands. He was trained by Wolfgang Thiel and Dan Lorand . Steffen Justus was a member of the Triathlon Friends Saarlouis and competed mainly in competitions over the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running).

In October 2008, the staff sergeant won the Munich marathon and the Munich triathlon with a new course record (4:12:03 hours). In October 2009 he started at the Frankfurt Marathon and was the best German runner there, improving his personal best from the previous year to 2:18:44 hours.

Vice world champion triathlon 2010

With his third place in the seventh and final race of the racing series in September 2010, Justus clinched the runner-up world title on the Olympic distance behind Spaniard Javier Gómez in the annual standings .

Justus started for the EJOT Team TV Buschhütten in 2011 , but his first start right (home club) was still with the “Triathlon Friends SaarLouis” association. He was a member of the B-team of the German Triathlon Union . Justus was appointed a member of the "Gold Group" by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) for the 2011 season - the ten best women and men from previous years represent the ITU in public and secure their national associations for each of the seven races of the ITU World Championship Series an additional starting place.

2012 Summer Olympics

Steffen Justus, together with Jan Frodeno and Maik Petzold, qualified for a starting place at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where he finished 16th. In the world rankings in 2014, he was the second best German behind Gregor Buchholz (11th) in 20th place. In the 2015 world rankings, he was again ranked 29th as the second-best German.

In the two-year qualification period for a starting place at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games , Steffen Justus achieved the best placement of the male German athletes on the ITU Olympic qualification list with 31st place, but did not meet the athletic qualification criteria agreed by DTU and DOSB and was not nominated. He finished the 2016 World Championship racing series as the best German in 23rd place and at the end of the year, after the race on December 10, 2016 (Ironman 70.3 Bahrain), declared that his time as a professional athlete was over.

In April 2017, the then 35-year-old German runner-up on the short distance duathlon. Steffen Justus has been responsible for screening talent at the German Triathlon Union (DTU) since 2017 .

In May 2018 he started in the super marathon (73.9 km) at the GutsMuths Rennsteig run . Steffen Justus lives in Saarbrücken . He has been a trainer at SCN Neubrandenburg since May 1, 2019 .
