Friedrich III. von Plankenfels († May 24, 1457 in Salzburg ) was bishop of Regensburg from 1450 to 1457 .

Life

Friedrich came from the knightly family of Plankenfels , whose ancestral castle was Plankenfels Castle . Together with his brother Ulrich von Plankenfels , 1453–1467 Bishop of Chiemsee , Friedrich was enrolled at the University of Vienna in 1423 . He acquired the academic title of Doktor decretorum (Dr. decr.) And had several benefices at the cathedral monasteries in Bamberg , Freising and Regensburg, where he had also been curator since 1448.

After the death of the Regensburg bishop Friedrich von Parsberg , Friedrich von Plankenfels was elected as his successor by the cathedral chapter on January 23, 1450 . After his predecessor had agreed to an election surrender for Regensburg for the first time , the agreements governing the dealings between the new bishop and the canons were further elaborated. Friedrich III. undertook, among other things, to submit to an arbitrator or metropolitan in the event of differences of opinion with the cathedral chapter and to compensate as far as possible for the financial damage caused by his predecessor with the sale of episcopal goods. In addition, the inalienability of Donaustauf , Wörth and Hohenburg , decreed by the Basel Council , was to remain. The papal confirmation of the election took place on March 23, 1450, and on May 31, 1450 Friedrich was ordained bishop by the Salzburg Metropolitan Friedrich IV. Truchsess von Emmerberg in Salzburg Cathedral . On November 10th were him by King Friedrich III. handed over the regalia in Wiener Neustadt . Because of the imperial princely duties connected with it, he moved with King Friedrich to Rome in late autumn 1451, where he attended his imperial coronation in March 1452.

During his tenure as Bishop of Regensburg, Friedrich von Plankenfels took part in the Salzburg Provincial Synod in 1451. He fully supported the church and monastery reform initiated by the Cardinal Legate Nikolaus von Kues and the Melk Prior Johannes Schlitpacher . The resolutions of the Salzburg Provincial Synod of 1456, in which he again participated, he promulgated in the spring of 1457 at a convent of the Regensburg diocesan clergy . Among other things, it was about the sanctification of Sunday, the practice of indulgence , the fight against the Hussites and the share of the pastors in the tithe or in the collections .

The Hussite threat was still not averted. For the time of Friedrich III. Cases have come down to us in which German aristocrats betrayed clergymen who were deported to Bohemia or who had to buy themselves out for ransom. The bishop also addressed this subtle continuation of previous disputes at the Provincial Synod of Salzburg.

Friedrich von Plankenfels died on May 24, 1457 in Salzburg. His body was buried in Regensburg Cathedral .
