Georg von Pappenheim
Georg von Pappenheim , also Georg (Freiherr) Marschalk von Pappenheim († December 10, 1563 ) was the 48th Bishop of Regensburg and Prince-Bishop of the Regensburg Monastery from 1548 to 1563.
origin
Georg von Pappenheim came from the Swabian - Franconian noble family von Pappenheim . Due to the hereditary Reichsmarschallamt, the hereditary office became part of the name. Georg von Pappenheim is therefore also listed as Georg Marschall or Marschalk von Pappenheim. The eponymous headquarters is Pappenheim with Pappenheim Castle in the Altmühltal . Pappenheim is now a town in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . Family members have risen to high ecclesiastical dignitaries in the Eichstätt , Augsburg and Regensburg area , according to Christoph von Pappenheim as Bishop of Eichstätt (1535–1539). Also a contemporary of George is Matthäus von Pappenheim (1458–1541).
Bishop of Regensburg
Under George the Counter Reformation reached the diocese. Nevertheless, Josef Staber describes the uncertain conditions in Regensburg, which seemed to be characterized by murders and alcoholism. At a synod it was lamented that clergymen dressed in secular clothing and sometimes armed themselves with long knives. Even if the emperor called for a return to the old faith after the interim, there was strong support for Protestantism in Regensburg and scholars such as Nicolaus Gallus and Justus Jonas the Elder contributed to the confessionalization . In 1555 the Augsburg Imperial and Religious Peace was established, which granted the imperial cities freedom of religion. The epitaph of the bishop shows him in splendid official costume and the episcopal insignia.
