David Kölderer von Burgstall (* around 1536 - † June 22, 1579 ) was Bishop of Regensburg from 1567 to 1579.

biography

David Kölderer von Burgstall studied theology at the University of Freiburg and at the University of Ingolstadt . After being ordained a priest in 1561, he was custodian and cathedral dean in Regensburg. At the age of about thirty he was elected Bishop of Regensburg by the cathedral chapter on February 6, 1567 . Only two years after the election did Pope Pius V give confirmation in 1569; the reason for this were (probably by no means false) rumors about a relationship between the elected bishop David Kölderer von Burgstall and a nun.

During the term of office of Bishop David the gradual reception and implementation of the reform demands of the Council of Trent in the old Bavarian dioceses took place. Provincial synods, which met in Salzburg in 1569 and 1573, called for the establishment of seminaries for the better scientific training and spiritual formation of the diocesan priests, the fight against cohabitation among the clergy, the reform of the liturgy and the implementation of regular visitations in the parishes by the bishops. Bishop David's serious efforts to implement these reform demands in his diocese are shown by the diocesan synods held in 1569, 1571, 1576 and 1577. Nevertheless, the bishop's zeal for reform was hardly successful, as the Regensburg cathedral chapter, whose members - like most members of the women's and men's monasteries in the episcopal city - could by no means be regarded as moral models in their lifestyle, the necessary support, not only the reallocation of financial resources required, refused. So it is not surprising that the Apostolic Nuncio Bartolomeo Portia named the Regensburg clergy in his visitation report of 1573 probably the most depraved in Germany. Pope Gregory XIII succeeded in writing to win the Bavarian Duke Albrecht V as an advocate for the visitations of Bishop David and to initiate reform efforts. The epitaph of the bishop shows him in splendid official costume and the episcopal insignia.
