Johann II von Streitberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann II von Streitberg , also Johann Streitberger († April 1, 1428 ) was 39th Bishop of Regensburg and Prince-Bishop of the Regensburg Monastery from 1421 to 1428.

Bishop of Regensburg

Johann II von Streitberg came from the von Streitberg family . He was first canon of Regensburg and pastor of Tegernheim .

He was involved in preparations for a crusade against the Hussites and was involved in several feuds with neighboring princes. Assaults by the Hussites in the Upper Palatinate took place during his entire term of office. The defeat in the Battle of Mies in 1427 meant that the Hussites only advanced further. The Schönthal Monastery and the Schwarzhofen Monastery were burned down. Three Benedictines from the Sankt Emmeram monastery who were in Böhmischbruck were murdered. The Hussites also had individual advocates among the clergy in the Regensburg diocese. In 1423 two Regensburg priests were demoted by the bishop and burned by the secular judiciary.

The chancellor reform had to be enforced by force in the Ensdorf monastery . The abbot he appointed against the will of the monks only got access to the monastery with his support. The monks then left the monastery and returned after a few days with weapons. The abbot fled, but the bishop finally enforced his assumption of office. The reforms were introduced peacefully in the monasteriesChecking and Frauenzell .

Schism after his death

After his death there was an unusually disorderly choice of a successor. A total of three candidates, including Johann Sumpringer , vied for the bishopric. While the election was initially in favor of Erhard Sattelboger , various people from the cathedral chapter intervened directly with the Pope. The chosen Johann was even incorrectly portrayed as "one-eyed and lame". Pope Martin V unceremoniously appointed another, his follower, the former auxiliary bishop of Amberg, Conrad VII of Soest .
