Markus Hummel

Markus Hummel (born June 9, 1984 in Augsburg ) is a German white water paddler . As a freestyle / canoe Rodeo -Paddler Hummel enters competitions in both the C1 to -Boot in which he celebrated his greatest successes, as well as in K1 . With a short break, he has been a member of the German National Kayak Freestyle Team since 2001. His successes include second place in the overall Eurocup ranking in 2004, two first places in individual Eurocup competitions (2006 and 2008) and fourth place at the 2009 World Cup.

Hummel belongs to the association Naturfreunde Augsburg . He was originally sponsored by Prijon and later by Wavesport (both boat manufacturers) and the paddle manufacturer Kober and drives for the adidas Sickline team, with whom he made film recordings in Norway and paddled in Greenland in 2007.

The paddler, who lives in Augsburg and trains on the Augsburg ice canal, also undertakes white water expeditions and trains white water instructors.

As the son of a passionate paddler, Markus Hummel began canoeing at an early age. After his father took him on board at an early age, he paddled himself at the age of 6, and the first whitewater courses followed at the age of 10. At 13, Hummel got his first own boat and at 15, when he started with the canoe odeo , a rodeo boat (K1). At the age of 16, Hummel took second place among the under 16s in his first competition on the Augsburg ice canal. Then he got his first boat sponsored by Prijon .

After school, Hummel successfully completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter . At the age of 18, Hummel made the instructor license for white water canoeing. He paddled in Corsica, Switzerland, Austria, Norway and, after completing his apprenticeship, four months in New Zealand. He also took part in the World Cup in Sydney . In 2003 Hummel started paddling C1 as well, i.e. H. in a kayak that is driven like a Canadian on your knees and with a one-sided paddle .

Hummel did his community service in Augsburg with the Red Cross . He has been studying business administration there since autumn 2008 .

In competitive sports, Hummel achieved his best performance in C1, but he also competes in K1. Hummel's greatest successes so far are a second place in the overall Eurocup ranking in 2004 and two first places (2006 and 2008) in the Eurocup competitions in Augsburg. At the 2009 World Cup, Hummel came fourth. In the K1, Hummel achieved third place in the 2007 German Freestyle Championship.

Hummel belongs to the kayak department of Naturfreunde Deutschland (Augsburg), the Alpine Kayak Club and, since 2006, the Bavarian Naturefriends, where he trains kayak instructors / guides.

Hummel, whose favorite rivers are in Norway (lower Rauma and Store Ulla ) and New Zealand ( Perth ), is particularly active in winter with skiing, snowboarding, climbing and saunas.

  • 2008 German Championship, C1: 1st place; K1: 5th place (= 1st or 10th place overall)
  • 2009 German Championship (C1): 1st place
  • 2009 Kayak Freestyle Graz (June 6, 2009), C1: 2nd place; K1: 14th place
